    • A curtain coating device for paper and board machines has a nozzle beam (10) with a nozzle lip (12) with an edge strip (11) for feeding the coating color curtain and edge guides (20) located along each edge of the nozzle lips (12) controlling the width of the coating color curtain. The edge guide (20) has upper and lower ends. Flow surfaces (22) extend in a substantially vertical direction parallel and next to each other. The edge guide has a lubrication feed (24), additional lubrication feeds (26) and a suction opening (27). The flow surfaces (22) are inclined toward each other forming a flow guide recess (25) which extends in a vertical direction such that the form of the flow surfaces (22) with the flow guide recess (25) is concave. A protrusion (21) extends within the recess in the direction of the flow guide recess (25).

    • A curtain coater and coating method for coating a moving web with at least one layer of a liquid coating composition utilizes a web-supporting roller for conveying the web along a path, a coating hopper for forming a free falling generally planar curtain of the coating composition which extends transversely of the web and impinges upon the web at a point on the path where the web is supported on the roller, edge guides on opposite sides of the web path for laterally guiding the falling curtain by contact with the curtain side edges, and a curtain intercepting member is occasionally displaceable from an inoperative position out of the path of the falling curtain to an intercepting position adjacent the web for intercepting the falling curtain, wherein the intercepting member has a dimension transversely of the web that is greater that the transverse dimension of the web itself and a portion of each of the edge guides adjacent to the web is displaceable independently of the coating hopper away from the web to a position removed from the web, preferably out of the plane of the falling curtain, and out of the way of the intercepting member to allow the intercepting member to take its intercepting position, and when the intercepting member is moved to inoperative position, each edge guide portion is returned to its position adjacent the web.

    • Apparatus for curtain coating a web or article includes a coating hopper, a support roller, guide rollers for leading the web to and from the support roller and an enclosure. Air which has been conditioned in respect of temperature, humidity and cleanliness is introduced into an upper region of the enclosure. Air flow controlling means are provided below the region into which the conditioned air is introduced. The flow controlling means serve to control the flow of air downwards so that it is uniform across a horizontal plane within the enclosure and has a speed of about 10 feed per minute in the region of the coating liquids in the curtain, that being a speed which will not cause disturbing effects on the liquids in the curtain. The enclosure prevents random air currents of uncontrolled velocity, temperature and cleanliness impinging on the liquids in the curtain and on the slide, which might otherwise adversely affect the product coating. The change of air and the humidity selected for the incoming air keep the humidity within the enclosure at acceptable levels, the humidity tending to increase by virtue of evaporation of the solvent or vehicle in the coating liquid. The air passes out of the enclosure well below the curtain, in the lowest region of the enclosure. The air in the enclosure is at a temperature approximating to that of the coating liquids. In this way condensation of evaporated solvent or vehicle on equipment above and around the liquid curtain, is avoided.
