    • A diesel engine using a low evaporativity fuel, and improves the fluidity of the air and fuel by injecting the fuel into a cylinder at the beginning of a compression stroke forming a uniform gaseous mixture, whereby the generation of NO.sub.x is minimized. A swirl chamber is formed in a piston, and a primary chamber by a combustion chamber structure provided in a cavity of a cylinder head. A fuel injection nozzle injects a low evaporativity fuel, such as heavy oil, into the cylinder at the beginning of a compression stroke, disperses the fuel into an air swirl in the cylinder, forms a uniform gaseous mixture of the fuel and air therein, and ignites and burns with the assistance of a glow plug the gaseous mixture entering the swirl chamber through communication ports at the end of the compression stroke. In another embodiment, the piston is provided with a plurality of radially arranged communication ports and a downwardly convergent fuel injection port, and a fuel injection nozzle injects a low evaporativity fuel into a cylinder at the beginning of a compression stroke, disperses the fuel into an air swirl in the cylinder, forms a uniform gaseous mixture of the fuel and air in the cylinder, and ignites and burns the gaseous mixture in the swirl chamber by reliably supplying an ignition fuel thereto through the fuel injection port at the terminal end of the compression stroke.

    • A combustion apparatus and a combustion system for an internal combustion engine wherein a funnel-shaped cone with an orifice at the apex thereof is provided in a combustion chamber and spaced from an ignition apparatus so that as a gaseous, combustible mixture is introduced into the chamber, it flows through the cone to the orifice where it is ignited by the ignition apparatus so that the flame caused thereby explodes outwardly through ejection openings and along the external surface of the cone into the chamber so as to envelope the uncombusted gases and cause maximum explosion and combustion of the mixture automatically. The structure is applicable to existing conventional spark ignition engines when the cone is provided at the front end portion of the spark plug. For compression ignition engines, the cone is provided in a pre-combustion chamber in the cylinder head or is attached to the cylinder head and extends into a chamber provided in the piston. In continuous-flow internal combustion engines, the cone is provided within the combustion chamber, first combustion being made outside of the cone and subsequent combustion being made inside of the cone.

    • An internal combustion engine comprising a piston (1) having a recessed combustion bowl (3) with a raised projection (4) in the floor of the bowl so as to define an annulus with the sides of the bowl, swirl means to cause the inlet air to rotate about said raised projection, and a fuel injector (2) having orifices that spray a plurality of jets into the annulus at spaced points around the projection (4), the cross-sectional area of the annulus being such as to vary around the projection (4) and to have a minimum value in a median plane (D--D) through the axis (C) of the projection (4), and the injector nozzle (2) being located in a central region of the bowl (3) and having orifices orientated so as to direct jets of fuel both sides of said median plane. The cross-section area of the annulus is varied by varying the radial width of the annulus, this being achieved conveniently in a circular bowl by offsetting the axis (C) of the projection (4) radially from the axis of the bowl (A). Both axes then lie on the median plane (D--D) through the narrowest part of the annulus. The injector nozzle (2) is also located along the median plane (D--D) and directs fuel jets into the four quadrants of the annulus defined by the median plane (D--D) and perpendicular plane (E--E) through the axis (A) of the bowl (3).
