    • A rail repair method enables repair of rails and rail-like structures. A rail defect is initially identified and removed as contained within a volumetric material portion so as to form a contoured void while maintaining continuity of the rail opposite the void. A pre-formed insert is then placed into the void thereby effecting a rail-to-insert interface. Current is driven through the interface as force directs the insert against the rail. Resistance heat and pressure weld the insert to the rail. The flash welding aspects remove oxides and other impurities from the interface, and the forge welding aspects create a robust solid state weld. Excess material, whether flash, rail, or insert-based, is removed during the finishing processes to provide a virtually seamless rail repair. The solid state weld repair methodology may be used to repair any number of targeted metallic rail-like structures.

    • The process for metallically connecting the faces of rods. Axially normal dressing at least two rod free ends, then placing the cross sectional surfaces of the rod free ends one against another under pressure. Oscillating the two rod free ends in the opposite direction to one another, whereby frictional heat is generated on the contact surfaces of the rod free ends. Further, when the conditions for a metallic connection are met, the rod free ends are axially aligned and the pressurization of the cross sectional areas is increased. Resulting in the rod free ends being connected to one another over the entire surface.     • This invention relates to a thermite welding process for joining sections of a railway line in situ, the process including the preliminary step of mounting a suitable welding mould about the aligned sections of railway line to be welded together and sealing the mould to prevent run out; mounting a vibration means on the railway line at a suitable distance from the mould and operating it at a suitable frequency; heating the sections of railway line to a desired temperature; igniting an ignitor means and allowing it to drop into the mould to react with molten steel in the mould and fill a weld area about and between the sections of railway line in the mould; and when solidified, to vibrate the railway line for a further period of time until stress relieving of the cast weld area has occurred.
