    • Disclosed is a device for attaching corrective weights to a cylindrical outer surface of a rotor by means of electric resistance pressure welding, including an electrode (1) having a contact surface (20) for application against the rotor and comprising a supporting body (2) and a swinging body (6) having oppositely facing, congruent, spherical bearing surfaces (5, 8) suitable for abutting engagement with each other. The swinging body (6) is movably secured to the supporting body (2) such as to be able to perform limited swinging movements to all sides. A spring (14) arranged between the supporting body (2) and the swinging body (6) enables a gap to be produced between the spherical bearing surfaces (5, 8), whereby the contact surface (20) is in a position to align itself relative to the opposite surface of the rotor prior to pressure application by the welding force.

    • A rail repair method enables repair of rails and rail-like structures. A rail defect is initially identified and removed as contained within a volumetric material portion so as to form a contoured void while maintaining continuity of the rail opposite the void. A pre-formed insert is then placed into the void thereby effecting a rail-to-insert interface. Current is driven through the interface as force directs the insert against the rail. Resistance heat and pressure weld the insert to the rail. The flash welding aspects remove oxides and other impurities from the interface, and the forge welding aspects create a robust solid state weld. Excess material, whether flash, rail, or insert-based, is removed during the finishing processes to provide a virtually seamless rail repair. The solid state weld repair methodology may be used to repair any number of targeted metallic rail-like structures.

    • Superalloy components are joined by mating a recess formed in one component with a corresponding projection formed in another component along a contact surface. The components are compressed along the contact surface and resistance heat brazed to each other. Current is passed between the components at a selected flow rate and application time until brazing alloy melting occurs along the contact surface, and they are mutually affixed to each other. When repairing a damaged surface portion of a superalloy material component, the damaged portion is removed to form an excavated recess. A repair splice is formed, preferably of a same material with similar mechanical structural properties, having a mating projection with profile conforming to the corresponding recess profile. The splice and substrate are resistance heat brazed under compression pressure until brazing alloy melting occurs along the contact surface, so that they are mutually affixed.

    • A blind rivet assembly is inserted through aligned holes provided in a top member and bottom member. The blind rivet includes a rivet head that abuts the top member and a hollow rivet shank integral with the rivet head. A mandrel includes a mandrel stem that extends thorough the hollow rivet and a mandrel head that abuts the terminal end of the rivet shank. A tool holds the rivet head in contact with the top member and forcibly withdraws the mandrel in the direction to exit the aligned holes to thereby cause the mandrel head of axially collapse and radially expand the terminal end of the rivet shank into engagement with the bottom member to thereby attach the top member and the bottom member together. Weld current is then applied to the rivet head to thereby weld the blind rivet in place.
