摘要： A roofing product can include roofing granules that can include substrates and a coating covering the substrates of the roofing granules. The substrates can be in the form of base particles, such as ceramic base particles or proppants, or base particles having a coating with an L* of at least approximately 55. In a particular aspect, a coating at an exposed surface of the roofing granule can include a compound that includes a metallic element; and nitrogen, carbon, or a combination of nitrogen and carbon. In another aspect, the coating has a relatively low L*, reasonably high solar reflectance, and good emissivity. The coating can be formed on a substrate using a fluidized bed. In a particular aspect, the coating can be performed as a chemical vapor deposition or a sol-gel process. If needed or desired, the roofing granules can be doped to achieve their desired properties.

The coated substrates of the invention exhibit improved properties such as increased durability, photocatalytic activity, etc. as a result of the undercoating layer.

摘要： New methods of forming color-coated gemstones are provided. These methods broadly comprise subjecting a source of metal (e.g., an organometallic compound) to a vapor deposition process so as to form the metal source into a vapor that is subsequently deposited onto the surface of a previously heated gemstone. The vapor is also diffused into the gemstone so as to form a mixed zone of gemstone having the metal source dispersed or intermixed therein. The coated gemstone is then subjected to heat treatment to alter the valence state of the metal in the coating until the desired colored coating is obtained, resulting in coatings having superior adhesion and optical properties.

摘要： The process with a view to imparting to the treated article a resistance to frictional wear, a corrosion resistance, and a color, is characterized according to the invention in that the surface of the article is subjected to a thermochemical pretreatment under electric plasma in a vessel under an atmosphere containing reactive species such as N.sub.2 and hydrogen, the reactive species diffusing into and precipitating in the metal matrix of the article to form a diffusion sublayer and in that a layer of carbon in vapor phase is deposited under electric plasma on the surface thus treated, in the same vessel, the composition of the atmosphere for the pretreatment being gradually modified, on the one hand, by the introduction of a hydrocarbon and/or of a silane in the gaseous state and, on the other hand, by progressive reduction of the partial pressures of the reactive species employed during the pretreatment, and the maintenance of the hydrocarbon atmosphere for the carbon deposition.
