    • A process is provided for recovering a first polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) from a feed mixture including at least one additional fatty acid (e.g., a second fatty acid (FA)). The process optionally comprises: performing a main step of chromatographic separation using an aqueous organic eluent and collecting a first stream of eluent enriched in the first PUFA and a second stream of eluent enriched in the second FA; subjecting the second stream of eluent to a concentration step to obtain a concentrated portion including the second FA, and a depleted portion comprising eluent, but depleted of the second FA. The water-to-organic ratio of the depleted portion is lower than the water-to-organic ratio of the second stream of eluent. The process also includes: at least partially recycling the depleted portion for use in the main step of chromatographic separation.

    • The present invention provides a chromatographic separation process for recovering a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) product from a feed mixture, which process comprises the steps of: (i) purifying the feed mixture in a first separation step in a simulated or actual moving bed chromatography apparatus having a plurality of linked chromatography columns containing, as eluent, an aqueous organic solvent, to obtain an intermediate product; and (ii) purifying the intermediate product obtained in (i) in a second separation step using a simulated or actual moving bed chromatography apparatus having a plurality of linked chromatography columns containing, as eluent, an aqueous organic solvent, to obtain the PUFA product; wherein (a) the first and second separation steps are carried out sequentially on the same chromatography apparatus, the intermediate product being recovered between the first and second separation steps and the process conditions in the chromatography apparatus being adjusted between the first and second separation steps such that the PUFA product is separated from different components of the feed mixture in each separation step; or (b) the first and second separation steps are carried out on separate first and second chromatography apparatuses respectively, the intermediate product obtained from the first separation step being introduced into the second chromatography apparatus, and the PUFA product being separated from different components of the feed mixture in each separation step.

    • There is provided a process for reducing the free fatty acid content of natural oils by contacting the crude natural oil with a solvent to produce an oil product phase substantially depleted in free fatty acids and a free fatty acid rich solvent phase containing the extracted free fatty acids and some of the glycerides, and processing the free fatty acid rich solvent phase with a membrane to recover the glycerides from the solvent phase, comprising the steps of: (a) contacting the crude natural oil with an immiscible solvent; (b) separating the deacidifed natural oil phase from the solvent phase; (c) providing a selectively permeable membrane having a first surface and a second surface; (d) transferring a portion of the solvent and a portion of the free fatty acids and a lesser portion of the glycerides from the first surface to the second surface across the membrane by contacting the free fatty acid rich solvent phase with the first surface, wherein the pressure at the first surface is greater than the pressure at the second surface, and wherein the membrane is a selectively permeable membrane such that the membrane rejections of the free fatty acids (RFFA) and glycerides (RGLY) are greater than 0%, and the membrane rejection (RGLY) of the glycerides is at least 5% greater than the membrane rejection (RFFA) of the free fatty acids.

    • There are provided an intermolecular compound of (a) di-saturated medium chain fatty acids mono-saturated long chain fatty acid triglyceride and (b) 1,3-di-saturated long chain fatty acids 2-mono-unsaturated long chain fatty acid triglyceride, of which a long spacing value by X-ray diffraction is 65 Å or more, and foods containing the intermolecular compound. The intermolecular compound can be used as a part of fats and oils that constitute foods. Due to formation of the intermolecular compound, the fats and oils containing large amounts of symmetric triglycerides such as cocoa butter and those containing medium chain fatty acids do not form separate crystals and, therefore, can keep smooth texture and prevent blooming.
