    • A self cleaning pin for a fluid assisted injection molding apparatus that includes a pin body with a fluid passage and a shaft member. The shaft member is positioned in the pin, and is reciprocable between a retracted position and an extended position, wherein reciprocation of the pin drives intruding plastic from the end of the pin body. In its retracted position, a tip portion rests against a substantially mating seat, and provides continuous fluid communication between the fluid passage and a mold cavity. The pin also provides adjustable biasing means, the biasing means continuously biasing the pin toward its retracted position. A shaped recess is included in the end of the shaft member, and can be utilized to manually rotate the pin relative to a tensioning member threadedly received on the shaft member, thereby adjusting the biasing force.

    • An improved gas injection nozzle for use in gas-assisted injection molding process is disclosed. The improved gas injection nozzle comprises: (a) a nozzle body, and a nozzle cap fixedly connected to the nozzle body; (b) a gas inlet provided in the nozzle body so as to allow gas to be injected into a mold cavity via a gas channel formed inside both the nozzle body and the nozzle cap; (c) a heating coil provided on the gas injection nozzle; and (d) at least one circumferential groove formed on the outer surface of the nozzle cap. The circumferential groove formed on the outer surface of the nozzle cap preferably has the shape of a spiral groove, with a depth between about 0.2 mm and about 0.5 mm and a length between about 50 mm and about 150 mm. The combination of the heating coil and the circumferential groove prevents the formation of micro cracks that are often formed in the interstices between the nozzle cap and the sprue bushing during the cooling stage of injection molding process. These micro cracks allow passageways to be developed for the inert gas to be leaked out and a fall-off of the gas pressure inside the mold cavity, resulting in sinks and/or warpages to be formed on the injection molded product. The prevention of gas leakage also eliminates the need for continuous gas and thus reduces the manufacturing cost.

    • An apparatus for use in fluid assisted injection molding of plastic material so as to form an injection molded product includes a pair of mold members defining when closed the sealed cavity, a first opening provided in one of the mold members for allowing the injection of plastic material into the cavity and the second opening provided in one of the mold members, and spaced from the first opening, for allowing the injection of the fluid into the cavity. A sleeve extends through the second opening. The sleeve has a longitudinally extending bore with an open first end. Preferably, the sleeve is rigidly secured in relation to the one of the mold members through which it extends. A pin extends through the sleeve with the pin having a first end, located adjacent the sleeve first end, and a second end. Preferably the pin in rigidly secured in relation to the sleeve. A fluid flow passage is defined between the pin and the sleeve. In another embodiment, the fluid flow passage is defined between a tube and a pin. The tube is secured at one end to a bushing body. The busing is, in turn, positioned between a nozzle of an injection molding machine and a sprue of a mold cavity. In yet another embodiment, the pin is allowed to reciprocate in relation to the sleeve so as to selectively open and close a fluid flow passage defined between the pin and the sleeve.

    • An injection mold apparatus has a core and cavity halves. One or more gas poppet valves are affixed in the injection mold either in the movable and/or in the stationary halves of the mold. The poppet valves (or poppets) are located to open into a mold portion formed in the cavity between the movable portion of the injection mold and the fixed mold portion when the mold portions are closed. At least one gas line is connected to the poppets and to a gas pressure source and is adapted to open the poppets to the passage of nitrogen or other gas into the mold following the injection of molten plastic into the closed mold halves. Porous metal covers may be used to cover the opening in the mold either the movable and/or stationary halves of the injection mold in lieu of the gas poppet valves, and the gas pressure through the porous metal cover can be used to carry out the molding operation. An injection molding method is also taught using the injection of nitrogen gas into the mold immediately folowing the injection of the liquid plastic.

    • A method and system for the injection molding of plastic articles of enhanced surface quality using pressurized fluid introduced into the article defining cavity or runner of a mold by a sealed pin or valve having an orifice therein and movable between open and closed positions to inject gas into a subgate of the mold. In one embodiment, the fluid is a gas which is injected through the subgate between a pair of seals. The seals and the subgate prevent gas leakage around the periphery of the pin. The fluid is prevented from contaminating the molten resin in a nozzle from which it was injected to eliminate splay by either using a shut-off valve with the nozzle or by introducing the pressurized fluid into the molten resin parallel to its direction of flow. The method involves the initial step of injecting molten resin at a nominal injection pressure from the nozzle of an injection molding machine through a resin injection aperture at an upstream position in a mold. The resin travels along a resin flow path in the mold to the cavity defining the shape of the molded article at a downstream position. During or after resin injection, the pressurized charge of fluid enters the flow path at the orifice and passes into the mold cavity to distribute the molten plastic within the mold cavity. The fluid is contained within the mold cavity under pressure until the article has set up, and is thereafter vented.
