    • A vacuum extrusion line of the horizontal barometric leg type includes a vacuum chamber having an extrusion die at one end and a water baffle immersion cooler at the other end for extracting the extrudate to atmosphere, extrudate shaping and sizing equipment downstream of the die, a large diameter fixed bulkhead at the die, and first and second large diameter movable sections surrounding the shaping and sizing equipment, a smaller fixed section of the chamber. The first section sealing against the second section and the fixed section and telescoping over the fixed section to form a gap with the second section being movable within the limits of the gap. The second section also seals against the large diameter fixed bulkhead. In this manner the downstream equipment can be fully exposed by movement of one or both movable sections and adequate volume and spatial working environment is provided for large through-put. A simplified lock mechanism facilitates the quick opening and closing of the chamber.

    • A foam extrusion apparatus and method in which extrudate is extruded into a sealed chamber which may be subjected to pressure variation such as a vacuum with the controlled shaping of the plastic being obtained by power driven rolls within the chamber downstream of the die. Because of the harsh environmental conditions within the chamber it is desirable that the shaping or forming rolls be driven by an externally powered source which will therefore be not subject to the pressure, vacuum, or other deliterious conditions found within the chamber. Moreover, because of the external position of the drive with regard to the chamber, the entire system need not then be shut down in order to open the chamber and make the required adjustments or repairs. The chamber is preferably the upper end of a barometric leg into which the extrudate passes. The upper end of the chamber is closed by one or more bulkheads which are movable toward and away from the upper end of the chamber. The present invention utilizes DC drive motors on the exterior of the bulkheads and of course the chamber to drive the shaping rolls which are downstream of the die. With this arrangement, both torque and speed may be closely controlled and of course the chamber does not require to be opened to make adjustments, replacements or repairs to the power system.

    • A foam extrusion apparatus employs one or more extruders mounted on horizontal rails for movement toward and away from the end of a vacuum chamber which is in the form of an elongated inclined barometric leg. The upper end of the chamber is closed by two, substantially concentric in the closed position, substantial bulkheads, each also supported on rails and held in an inclined position to close the upper end of the chamber when moved; one against the chamber and the other against the one. A die is positioned on the inside of the other or smaller bulkhead and aligned with the leg when closed. The extruders are connected to the die through a length of pipe extending through the smaller bulkhead and sealed by a bellows. A shaping mechanism is supported on the interior of the one or larger bulkhead surrounding the die when both bulkheads close the upper end of the inclined barometric leg or vacuum chamber. The die is adjustable externally of the bulkhead. The extruders, die and bulkheads are movable as a unit or separately toward and away from each other to provide access to the die, to the shaping mechanism, and to the interior of the chamber.

    • An improved method and apparatus is disclosed for shaping and forming plastic foams as a foamable extrudate is extruded through the orifice, preferably arcuate, of an extrusion die. Immediately adjacent and downstream of the die orifice are opposed sets of curved rollers, each having substantially the same center of curvature as the die orifice. The roller set on one side of the extrudate pass line is adjustable as a set with respect to and substantially parallel to the pass line, while the rollers of the set on the opposite side are adjustable individually each to float with controlled pressure against the extrudate as it expands and moves between the roller sets. Each roller is comprised of a plurality of thin, cylindrical, circular wafers which are drivingly interconnected and journaled on curved core shafts. The wafers of opposed rollers in each set are individually driven for rotation at a controlled speed so that each opposed pair of rolls acts as a traction drive for the extrudate as it exits radially from the die orifice, such rollers controlling the expansion and movement of the extrudate while minimizing cell distortion. A surface finisher is provided downstream of the roll sets which comprises opposed extrudate engaging planar surfaces positioned on opposite sides of the extrudate, one being adjustably yet fixedly supported while the other is adjustably and floatingly supported pivotally at its center of gravity to exert a controlled floating pressure on the extrudate.

    • A foam extrusion apparatus and method employs tandem extruders mounted on horizontal rails for movement toward and away from the end of a vacuum chamber which is in the form of an elongated inclined barometric leg. The upper end of the chamber is closed by a substantial bulkhead also supported on rails and held in inclined position to close the end of the chamber when moved thereagainst. A die is positioned on the inside of the bulkhead and aligned with the leg when closed. The extruders are connected to the die through a length of pipe supported through the bulkhead by a stainless steel bellows. The pipe externally of the bulkhead is provided with a circulating jacket for temperature control. The die is adjustable externally of the bulkhead. The extruders, die and bulkhead are movable as a unit or separately toward and away from the chamber to provide access to the die and the interior of the chamber.
