    • In a lock device of a sliding mechanism, a pair of locking claws provided on a moving member are brought into resilient engagement with locking grooves of a locking groove group, whereby downward sliding of the moving member is permitted but upward sliding thereof is locked. The distance between the locking claws is longer than distance between the locking grooves, so that the moving member becomes locked against upward sliding at an interval smaller than the distance between the locking grooves. Thus, the moving member adapted to slide in one (downward) direction along a guide rail can be reliably locked against movement in the opposite (upward) direction at a very small interval.

    • A lock plate and a movable plate are provided to fix a seat at an optional position, and an actuator is provided between the seat and the movable plate. The seat is moved to the rear of a vehicle body in an initial stage of impact by the actuator. Acceleration is generated in the seat through impact abutment of a collapsible tube in the actuator against a piston head in an intermediate stage of impact. In a final stage of the impact, the seat is made integral with the vehicle body. The deceleration of the vehicle body and the seat and the deceleration of an occupant can be made equal to each other at an earlier timing. The apparatus can be installed by making use of a space under the seat, whereby the necessity of securing a special vacant space for installation of the apparatus can be obviated.

    • A safety seat belt device for use in a motor vehicle has a seal belt for constraining an occupant of the motor vehicle. The seat belt includes a shoulder belt portion for extending across the thorax of the occupant and a lap belt portion for extending across the lower waist of the occupant. The safety seat belt device also includes a lock device for locking both the shoulder belt portion and the lap belt portion when the motor vehicle undergoes a forward or rearward collision, and locking only the lap belt portion when the motor vehicle undergoes a lateral collision. The lock device may include a lock mechanism for locking the shoulder belt portion upon a forward or rearward collision, and a lock mechanism for locking the lap belt portion immediately when the seat belt is fastened by the occupant regardless of whether the motor vehicle suffers a lateral collision or not.

    • An occupant protecting system for a vehicle includes a triangular shock absorbing member which is accommodated in a folded state within an accommodating casing mounted along a roof rail. The shock absorbing member is held stationarily at its front and rear ends to a vehicle body by fixing pins. A movable pin mounted at a lower end of the shock absorbing member is connected through a wire to a developing or unfolding device mounted to a center pillar. The developing or unfolding device includes a gas generator and a cylinder with a piston slidably received therein and coupled to the wire. When the gas generator is operated upon collision of the vehicle to force the piston in the cylinder downwardly by a high pressure gas generated by the gas generator, the movable pin is pulled down through the wire, so that the shock absorbing member is drawn out of the accommodating casing and developed into a triangular shape. Thus, the membrane-like shock absorbing member, when being accommodated, is compact in size and can easily be mounted in a narrow space in the vehicle body.

    • As a moveable part of the vehicle body carrying a vehicle seat moves rearward under the action of an active or passive power source as a result of a vehicle crash, the seat belt which is anchored at the moveable part at one end and a fixed part of the vehicle body at another end is pulled rearward, and performs the function to apply a deceleration to the vehicle occupant in an early phase of the vehicle crash. This is followed by a slight slackening of the seat belt as the moveable part is subjected to a forward force. The active power source typically consists of a high pressure gas generating device, and a passive power source typically consists of a G control member which transmits the deceleration of a vehicle crash to the vehicle occupant from an early phase of the crash, and/or a stopper which applies a forward force to the moveable part as the moveable part moves rearward by a prescribed distance under the action of the power source. Thus, an early application of a forward deceleration followed by the application of an acceleration which tends to mitigate the unacceptable sharp rise of the deceleration of the vehicle occupant achieves a desirable time history of deceleration for the vehicle occupant, and minimizes the injury to the vehicle occupant for a given stroke of deformation of the vehicle body.

    • A seat belt retractor system comprising a seat belt retractor unit having a winding spool for winding a seat belt thereon, and a seat belt tightening unit for tightening the seat belt upon detection of occurrence of a vehicle crash. If the seat belt tightening unit uses an explosive propellant, it may be placed externally of the passenger compartment, for instance on the external wall surface of the floor tunnel, so as to eliminate any ill effects, such as explosive sound and combustion gas, which may be produced as a result of the combustion of the propellant.
