    • A vehicle occupant restraint system comprises a safety belt arrangement with a belt webbing, a belt buckle and one of an end- and deflection fitting. The restraint system further comprises two tracks with which a vehicle seat is connected and which, for displacement of the vehicle seat, are constructed for engagement into counter-tracks fixed to a floor of the vehicle. An elongated, rigid fastening element is provided which extends beneath the seat between the tracks and which is connected with both of the tracks. At least one belt tensioner is mounted to the fastening element.

    • During ordinary use (i.e., a non-collision state) a webbing guide and a locking bar are biased in the counter-clockwise direction by the biasing force of the bar spring and are held in their initial positions so that spaces are set. Since a webbing passes through the spaces, a tongue can smoothly slide relative to the webbing. During a vehicle collision, a pulling force exceeding a predetermined value is applied to the webbing in the direction of an occupant's lap and shoulder. By this pulling force, the webbing guide rotates in the clockwise direction and the locking bar rotates in the counter-clockwise direction and linearly moves rightward. Therefore, the webbing is clamped between the locking bar and the tongue body. The clamping force at this point includes a force pulling the webbing and the biasing force of a bar spring so that a large clamping force can be obtained.

    • An improved safety apparatus (10) is used in association with a belt (16) which restrains movement of an occupant of a vehicle. The belt (16) is taken up by and paid out from a retractor assembly (22). Upon the occurrence of vehicle deceleration greater than a predetermined deceleration, a solenoid assembly (132) operates a clamp assembly (28) to grip the belt (16) and prevent paying out of the belt. In one embodiment of the invention, the retractor assembly (22) includes a sensor assembly (54) which operates a retainer assembly (56) to prevent withdrawal of the belt from the retractor assembly when the deceleration of the vehicle is in excess of a predetermined deceleration. The sensor assembly (54) is mounted on a movable carriage (32) in the retractor assembly (22). Although the clamp assembly (28) and the retractor assembly (22) may be used in many different locations in a vehicle, they are advantageously located on the back (24) of a vehicle seat (12).

    • The invention relates to a deflection device with means for direct clamping locking of the belt which takes place according to the severity of the loading in a progressive manner. With the usually occurring locking in normal vehicle conditions, such as for example upon braking above 0.4 g, a first arresting action takes place with a weak clamping which does not damage the textile webbing. Only in the case of higher loading, which occurs in the case of an accident, a second arresting action occurs which effects secure and slip-free load transfer by application of aggressive clamping means. This type of locking is--excluding taut belts--the most efficient. It results in very small initial displacement of the occupant. The use-cost analysis is optimal since light and economic winders can be employed.
