    • The present invention is a method and apparatus for controlling the processing solid waste material in a vessel during a processing cycle, comprising: (1) loading the vessel with a charge of solid waste products, said vessel comprising: (a) a rotatably mounted cylindrical vessel having an interior surface and two ends, at least one end terminating in a hatch that may be opened to allow access to the interior of said vessel and sealably closed to allow pressurization of said vessel; (b) a vessel steam inlet for injecting steam into at least one of said ends so as to come into contact with waste material placed into said vessel; (c) a thermometer adapted to monitor the processing temperature of the waste material placed into said vessel during an operational cycle; (d) a timer adapted to monitor the processing time of an operational cycle for the waste material placed into said vessel; (e) a microprocessor having processing instructions adapted to calculate the required processing time by integrating the function of the said processing temperature versus the processing time so as to be able to determine whether a predetermined energy input to the waste material has been attained, and to issue a signal in response thereto; and (2) terminating said processing cycle in response to said signal.

    • The present invention includes an apparatus for processing solid waste products, the apparatus comprising: (a) a rotatably mounted cylindrical vessel having a first end and a second end, at least one of the ends terminating in an opening to allow access to the interior of the vessel and to sealably close the vessel to allow pressurization thereof, the vessel adapted to move between an operating position and loading-discharge position wherein the first end is higher than the second end; (b) at least one door adapted to sealably close the vessel at at least one end, the door adapted to be completely separated from the vessel; (c) a steam inlet for injecting steam into the vessel; (d) at least one actuator for moving the vessel between an operating position and a loading-discharge position wherein the first end is higher than the second end; and each opening provided with a door that is completely detachable from the vessel; and (e) a respective attachment portion adapted to attach each door to the vessel.

    • An autoclave system provides a means of sterilizing municipal solid waste, hydrolyzing many of its components, and preparing the material for post-autoclave automated separations. The present apparatus provides a means of drying the solid waste in the vessel, while conserving the energy used to dry the vessel. Non-contact steam is recovered through separations of steam and water, with condensate steam pressure regenerated by mechanical vapor recompression and condensate water returned to the boiler/steam generator. Heat transfer to combustion air, by heat transfer via heat pump to generate additional steam, and/or by mechanical vapor recompression recovers the latent heat of loose contact steam condensate. The process design provides for in-vessel drying while reducing the energy cost of operating a waste autoclave, as compared to the current art.
