    • A viscous fluid type heat generator including a housing assembly in which a fluid-tight heat generating chamber confining therein a viscous fluid to which a shearing action is applied by a disc-like rotor element rotated by a drive shaft, and having inner wall surfaces confronting outer surfaces of the rotor element, the inner wall surfaces of the fluid-tight heat generating chamber and the outer faces of the rotor element defining a gap in which the viscous fluid is held, the rotor element being provided with one or more through-holes formed in an outer peripheral portion and a radially inner portion thereof with respect to the axis of rotation of the rotor element so that the through-holes cooperate with one or more non-circumferentially extending elongate indentations provided in the inner wall surfaces of the fluid-tight heat generating chamber during the rotation of the rotor element to expand a heat generating region formed by the gap. The expansion of the heat generating region formed by the gap increases a restraint acting against movement of the viscous fluid caused by the rotation of the rotor element so as to increase friction and a shearing force acting on the viscous fluid, and heat generation by the viscous fluid is increased.

    • A variable capacity type viscous heater is provided in which the capacity reduction is carried out securely, and which can inhibit a viscous fluid from deteriorating the endurable heat generation even after a long period of service. For instance, it includes a heat-generating chamber, a collector passage, a supply passage, and a control chamber, which are formed therein. The collector passage is communicated with a central region of the heat-generating chamber, and is capable of opening and closing. The supply passage is communicated with a lower region of the heat-generating chamber. The control chamber is communicated with the collector passage and the supply passage. A silicone oil, held in the heat-generating chamber, is collected into the control chamber by the Weissenberg effect by way of the opened collector passage, thereby carrying out the capacity reduction. Whilst, the silicone oil, held in the control chamber, is supplied into the heat-generating chamber by way of the supply passage, thereby carrying out the capacity enlargement.

    • A viscous fluid type heat generating apparatus having a housing forming a cylindrical heat-generating chamber having a cylindrical wall surface and an axially spaced flat annular wall surface, and a rotatably supported rotor element having a cylindrical base portion and an axially extending tubular portion integral with the base portion forming a substantially cylindrical outer face and a cavity portion used as a fluid-storing chamber, the cylindrical portion of the rotor element cooperating with the cylindrical wall surface of the housing to define a main part of a heat-generating gap holding a viscous fluid which generates heat in response to an application of a shearing force to the viscous fluid in response to the rotation of the rotor element. The heat generating apparatus further having an intercommunicating passage providing a fluid communication between the heat-generating gap and the fluid storing chamber to thereby cause a circulation of the viscous fluid during the rotation of the rotor element, and a flow rate controlling actuator controlling an amount of circulation of the viscous fluid in response to a change in the rotating speed of the rotor element.

    • A heating system for a vehicle is provided which does not require a large boarding space in an engine room very much, which can be manufactured at a reduced cost, and which can fully heat a passenger compartment of a vehicle when an engine is started. For instance, in the vehicle heating system, a water pump (WP) and a viscous heater (VH) is incorporated into an installation housing (1), a plate (2) and a cover (3) which are bonded to a cylinder block of an engine. The water pump (WP) and the viscous heater (VH) are driven by a drive shaft (11) which is shared by them. Moreover, the viscous heater (VH) includes an auxiliary water jacket (WJ.sub.2). The auxiliary water jacket (WJ.sub.2) is communicated with a main water jacket (WJ.sub.1) of the engine by way of a pump chamber (4) of the water pump (WP), and is further communicated with a heater core for heating a passenger compartment of a vehicle.
