    • A silver halide photographic material which contains a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion and an internally fogged silver halide emulsion is development-processed in the presence of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by the general formulae (I) and (II) and at least one azaindene having a mercapto group to exhibit high photographic speed, high contrast and high maximum image density:R.sub.1 --(R.sub.3).sub.l X}.sub.n R.sub.3 '--R.sub.2 (I)wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each represents a hydrogen atom, an aryl group, an aryl group, or a heterocyclic group; R.sub.3 and R.sub.3 ' each represents an alkylene group, an arylene group, a heterocyclic group; X presents ##STR1## R.sub.4 represents a hydrogen atom or --R.sub.5 --Y}.sub.m R.sub.5 '--R.sub.6 ; R.sub.5 and R.sub.5 ' have the same meanings as R.sub.3 and R.sub.3 '; R.sub.6 has the same meaning as R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 ; Y represents ##STR2## R.sub.7 has the same meaning as R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 ; l represents 0 or 1, n represents an integer of 1 to 110, and m represents an integer of 0 to 10, and at least one X therein must be a sulfur atom: ##STR3## wherein Q represents atoms necessary to form a heterocyclic ring, and A represents an alkyl group, or an aryl group.

    • A method for preparing a light-sensitive silver iodobromide emulsion having a high aspect ratio, the emulsion containing a dispersion medium and silver iodobromide grains, with grains having a grain size of not less than 0.5 .mu.m, a thickness of not more than 0.3 .mu.m, and an average aspect ratio of not less than 5 constituting at least 50% of the total project area of emulsion grains, comprising (a) introducing a silver salt, and a bromide salt or a bromide salt and iodide salt into a reactor in which at least part of the dispersion medium has been introduced, (b) controlling the iodide ion concentration indicated by pI in the reactor prior to the introduction of at least the silver salt and the bromide salt within the range represented by the equation (I) as shown below: ##EQU1## wherein pI and pBr indicate the logarithmic values of reciprocals of concentrations of dissolved iodide ions and bromide ion, respectively, and (c) maintaining the pBr at not less than 0.8 after the introduction of the silver salt, and bromide salt or the bromide salt and iodide salt.

    • A silver halide photographic light-sensitive material is disclosed. The material is comprised of a support base having positioned thereon a silver halide emulsion layer and a protective layer. The silver halide emulsion layer includes at least two component layers including an upper layer and a lower layer. The upper layer is comprised of a photosensitive silver halide emulsion and the lower layer is comprised of a photosensitive silver halide emulsion and an inside fogged silver halide emulsion. The particle size of the inside fogged silver halide emulsion is smaller than that of the photosensitive silver halide emulsion in the upper layer and the lower layer. The material is highly sensitive and forms images which have high contrast and high density. The material is capable of forming images having a pure black tone. When the materials are processed they create substantially no stain even if a stopping bath is not utilized.

    • A method of treating a direct positive silver halide sensitive material is disclosed. The material is comprised of a base having thereon a compound represented by the general formula (I), a sensitive silver halide photographic emulsion layer and a hydrophilic colloid layer. The exposed material is developed in the presence of the compound represented by the general formula (II) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 independently represent a hydrogen atom, an aliphatic residue, an aromatic residue or a heterocyclic residue, R.sup.3 represents a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic residue, R.sup.4 represents a hydrogen atom, an aliphatic residue or an aromatic residue, and X represents a divalent aromatic residue; ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 represent each a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic residue, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 may form a ring by linking together, R.sup.3 represents a divalent aliphatic residue, X represents a single bond or a divalent heterocyclic ring containing nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur atoms, and M represents a hydrogen atom, an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, a quaternary ammonium salt, a quaternary phosphonium salt or an amidino group.The invention provides a process wherein the sharpness and edge effects of direct positive images are greatly improved. The results obtained with the process do not vary due to changes in the bromine ion concentration in the developing solution or the pH thereof.
