    • Molded, soft composite articles such as seat cushions are made by (a) applying a composition which forms a soft elastomer to all interior walls of an open mold, (b) introducing a composition which will react to form a low density, high resiliency, flexible foam under molding conditions into the mold in a manner such that the foam-forming composition will be substantially completely within the elastomer-forming composition; (c) closing the mold (i) prior to introduction of the foam-forming composition or (ii) at some point during or subsequent to introduction of the foam-forming mixture but before foam formation is completed and (d) allowing the foam-forming mixture to form a foam. The composite articles produced by this simple one-step process are characterized by good cushioning characteristics, good abrasion resistance and good mold reproducibility. This molding process generates less waste and requires less labor and equipment than current commercial processes.

    • This invention relates to a process for preparing optionally reinforced rigid polyurethanes by the reaction, under resin transfer molding conditions at an isocyanate index of 90 to 130, of(a) an organic polyisocyanate, with(b) 15 to 80 percent by weight, based on the total of components (b), (c), and (d), of certain polyester polyols having long-chain fatty acid or fatty alcohol groups, a number average molecular weight of 500 to 3000, and a metal ion content below 100 ppm; and(c) 20 to 85 percent by weight, based on the total of components (b), (c), (d) and (e), of one or more crosslinkers, other than component (b), containing 3 to 8 hydroxyl groups and having a molecular weight of 92 to 1000 and a metal ion content below 100 ppm,(d) 0 to 60 percent by weight, based on the total of components (b), (c), and (d), of an isocyanate-reactive compound, other than a polyester polyol of component (b), having a metal ion content below 100 ppm, selected from (i) an isocyanate-reactive polyol containing 3 to 6 hydroxyl groups and having a number average molecular weight of more than 1000 to 10,000, (ii) an isocyanate-reactive diol having a number average molecular weight of 62 to 10,000, and (iii) mixtures thereof, and(e) 0.05 to 3 parts by weight, based on the total amount of components (b), (c), (d) and (e), of a delayed action catalyst.

    • This invention relates to a flame-retardant polyurethane spray system prepared by mixing at an isocyanate index of from 90 to 120(A) an isocyanate composition containing(a) an organic polyisocyanate, and(b) 0 to 50 wt. %, relative to the organic polyisocyanate, of a halogen-containing organic flame retardant; and(B) an isocyanate-reactive composition containing(a) 10 to 80 wt. % of an isocyanate-reactive compound having a molecular weight of 400 to 10,000 and functionality of 2 to 7;(b) 1 to 50 wt. % of an isocyanate-reactive compound having a molecular weight less than 399 and functionality of 2 to 6;(c) 0 to 15 wt. % of an isocyanate-reactive tertiary amine polyether having a molecular weight of 100 to 1000;(d) 5 to 55 wt. % of a flame retardant other than a halogen-containing organic flame retardant, optionally in combination with a halogen-containing organic flame retardant, with the proviso that the weight ratio of the total amount of halogen-containing organic flame retardant in (A) and (B) to the amount of other flame retardants in (B) is from 0.4 to 1.5;(e) 0.01 to 1.5 wt. % of an organic metal catalyst or a mixture thereof with a tertiary amine catalyst; and(f) 0 to 15 wt. % of additives, wherein the quantities of components (B)(a) to (B)(f) are relative to the total amount of components (B)(a) to (B)(e).The invention further relates to a method for spray application of such flame-retardant polyurethane systems and to the resultant polyurethanes.
