    • A cast iron brake caliper with improved fatigue life, and a process and process equipment for pre-stressing a cast iron brake caliper to provide improved fatigue life, is provided. In the process, a load is applied to a cast iron caliper, where the load is high enough to locally yield and plastically deform the cast iron material, but not high enough to cause material failure, such as cracking. Upon load removal, residual compressive stresses in the cast iron caliper lower the mid-point of the stress range the plastically-deformed region of the caliper sees during in-service use, and thereby lowers the peak stress seen in this region, increasing fatigue life. The process permits a cast iron brake caliper to be designed to use less material and thus fit within constrained wheel rim envelopes, without the need to resort to high cost materials or other alternative design strategies.

    • The present invention provides a brake actuator assembly including a housing having a generally radial annular flange portion and a cover having a generally radial annular flange portion generally co-axially aligned with the generally radial annular flange portion of the housing. A cup-shaped flexible diaphragm having an outer radial annular rim portion is disposed between the generally radial annular flange portions of the housing and the cover. A retaining element generally surrounds and compresses the generally radial annular flange portions of the housing and the cover against the rim portion of the flexible diaphragm. The rim portion of the diaphragm includes a wedge-shaped edge portion and co-axially aligned flats on opposite sides of the rim portion adjacent to the wedge-shaped edge portion aligning the flange portions of the housing and the cover. In another embodiment, a flexible brake diaphragm includes a cup-shaped flexible diaphragm having an outer radial annular rim portion. The rim portion of the diaphragm includes a wedge-shaped edge portion and co-axially aligned flats on opposite sides of the rim portion adjacent to the wedge-shaped edge portion.

    • An improved brake actuator is fully sealed against ingress of liquid or other contaminants. Separate breather tubes selectively communicate each of the pressure ports to the non-pressurized sides of the service and spring chambers. The separate breather tubes provide clean air into the non-pressurized chambers. Relief valves are positioned in each of the breather tubes. The pressurized ports may be reconfigured into two configurations such that the source of pressurized air may be connected to either of two orientations. In addition, a seal closely receives the push rod such that the non-pressurized chamber of the service side is fully sealed against ingress of liquids.

The cylinder head includes an intake port, an exhaust port, a dual-function chamber, a poppet valve positioned within the dual-function chamber, and a flapper valve also positioned within the dual-function chamber, capable of sealing the intake port from the dual-function chamber, capable of sealing the exhaust port from the dual-function chamber. If the cylinder head is for a two-cycle engine, an injector may be positioned within the cylinder head so that fuel is injected either within the dual-function chamber, or directly injected within the combustion chamber. A process of operating the cylinder head in conjunction with an internal combustion engine is also disclosed.

    • A braking system for the tractor unit of a tractor trailer vehicle in which the ratio of the pressure applied to the front brakes to the pressure applied to the rear brakes changes automatically when a trailer is connected to or disconnected from the tractor. The brake system includes two dual mode relay valves and feedback conduits which convey feedback pressures between the front and rear dual mode valves and between a trailer brake service conduit and the front valve. The brake system includes brake pressure proportioning apparatus which is operative to reduce brake pressures on the rear tractor brakes, during normal brake applications, when the tractor is operated bobtail but which can be overriden by a vehicle operator if conditions warrant. The pressure feedback and system hysterresis cooperate to produce balanced braking and the proper sequence of brake application under a variety of vehicle operating conditions.

    • An improved brake actuator, particularly an improved sealed service chamber, having a flexible tubular seal affixed at one end in the central pushrod opening in sealed relation and surrounding the pushrod in sealed relation in the service chamber housing. The improved seal is generally hourglass-shaped including a midportion which closely circumscribes the pushrod in sealed relation and a free end portion which closely circumscribes the pushrod. A relatively inflexible generally diamond-shaped washer surrounds the midportion of the seal which improves sealing, assures concentricity of the tubular seal, prevents the seal from being pushed through the pushrod opening and provides for easy assembly of the seal and washer assembly in the service chamber around the pushrod. The improved end wall of the service chamber housing includes an offset recessed central portion surrounding the mounting bolts and relatively thin preferably V-shaped contact surfaces which generally circumscribe the recessed portion. The contact surfaces are drawn tightly against the mounting bracket as the nuts on the mounting bolts are torqued against the mounting bracket, significantly reducing vibration between the end wall of the service chamber and the mounting bracket.
