摘要： In a brake actuator including a plurality of actuator housing portions, a diaphragm seal, partially delimiting a parking brake de-actuation chamber, is retained between adjacent actuator housing portions, and an elastic element disposed between the diaphragm seal and one of the housing portions opposes expansion of the parking brake de-actuation chamber. A push rod extends into and out of a service brake actuation chamber upon respective release of fluid pressure from the parking brake de-actuation chamber and supply of fluid pressure to the parking brake de-actuation chamber. In order to constrain a central portion of the diaphragm seal for movement together with both the push rod and a piston, a clamping arrangement is used to axially clamp the central diaphragm seal portion between an end of the push rod and a surface of the piston.

摘要： A system and method are provided for mounting, removing and retaining brake pads in disc brakes, such as air-operated disc brakes utilized on commercial vehicles, in a manner which does not require the use of separate brake pad retaining devices while providing positive retention of the brake pad. A preferred embodiment includes a brake caliper mount having brake pad abutment surfaces having radially-oriented and lateral grooves which permit a brake pad with corresponding projections on is lateral sides to be inserted through an opening of the brake caliper into the radially-oriented grooves until the backing plate projections are aligned with the lateral groove, and advancing the brake actuator behind the brake pad to place the brake pad in an operating position in which the actuator prevents the brake pad from realigning with the radially-oriented grooves until the actuator is retracted to permit brake pad extraction.

摘要： In order to safely and conveniently assemble and service new design spring brake actuators having power springs located in the middle of the actuator, the actuator's rear chamber cover must be able to withstand high localized forces from tools such as power spring compression rods. A reinforcement and method for its installation is provided, in which a plurality of reinforcement plates is stacked on the rear chamber cover about a tool-insertion aperture, and the outermost plate is crimped about the aperture, thereby securing the plates to the rear chamber cover in a cost- and time-efficient manner. Preferably, the lip of the rear chamber cover aperture is stamped when the cover is formed such that the lip protrudes axially outward to help assure that the lip is captured between the crimped reinforcing plate on one side and the remaining reinforcing plates on the other side.

摘要： An improved brake actuator is fully sealed against ingress of liquid or other contaminants. Separate breather tubes selectively communicate each of the pressure ports to the non-pressurized sides of the service and spring chambers. The separate breather tubes provide clean air into the non-pressurized chambers. Relief valves are positioned in each of the breather tubes. The pressurized ports may be reconfigured into two configurations such that the source of pressurized air may be connected to either of two orientations. In addition, a seal closely receives the push rod such that the non-pressurized chamber of the service side is fully sealed against ingress of liquids.

A process of operating the cylinder head in conjunction with an internal combustion engine is also disclosed.

摘要： A braking system for the tractor unit of a tractor trailer vehicle in which the ratio of the pressure applied to the front brakes to the pressure applied to the rear brakes changes automatically when a trailer is connected to or disconnected from the tractor. The brake system includes two dual mode relay valves and feedback conduits which convey feedback pressures between the front and rear dual mode valves and between a trailer brake service conduit and the front valve. The brake system includes brake pressure proportioning apparatus which is operative to reduce brake pressures on the rear tractor brakes, during normal brake applications, when the tractor is operated bobtail but which can be overriden by a vehicle operator if conditions warrant. The pressure feedback and system hysterresis cooperate to produce balanced braking and the proper sequence of brake application under a variety of vehicle operating conditions.

A relatively inflexible generally diamond-shaped washer surrounds the midportion of the seal which improves sealing, assures concentricity of the tubular seal, prevents the seal from being pushed through the pushrod opening and provides for easy assembly of the seal and washer assembly in the service chamber around the pushrod. The improved end wall of the service chamber housing includes an offset recessed central portion surrounding the mounting bolts and relatively thin preferably V-shaped contact surfaces which generally circumscribe the recessed portion. The contact surfaces are drawn tightly against the mounting bracket as the nuts on the mounting bolts are torqued against the mounting bracket, significantly reducing vibration between the end wall of the service chamber and the mounting bracket.
