    • A guidewire for use with a catheter has varying radiopacity in its distal end. In one embodiment the guidewire includes a shaft having an outer helical coil attached to the distal region of the shaft, the coil extending distally beyond the distal end of the shaft and terminating in a tip weld. A smaller diameter inner helical coil is disposed within the outer coil and is attached at its proximal end to the distal end of the shaft and at its distal end to the tip weld. The inner coil is formed from a highly radiopaque material. The portion of the shaft contained within the outer coil is plated thinly with a highly radiopaque material. When viewed under fluoroscopy, the highly radiopaque coil will define a dark image whereas the more proximal plated portion of the shaft will define a moderately radiopaque image. In other embodiments, the coil at the distal end of the catheter is variously electroplated to provide regions of high radiopacity, moderate radiopacity and relatively no radiopacity.

    • A guide wire system for use in catheter exchanges avoids the need for a separate exchange wire. Instead of the conventional practice in which the initial guide wire is removed and replaced with a longer exchange wire, a guide wire extension is attached to the proximal end of the initial guide wire thereby increasing its effective length so that it may be used to perform a catheter exchange. The initial guide wire remains in place in the patient's vasculature. The proximal end of the guide wire and the distal end of the exchange wire are formed to define a connection which may be crimped to effect the connection between the two wires. A crimping tool is provided to hold the mating ends of the guide wire and extension wire together while effecting the crimp.

    • Suture clips and suture clip loading, delivery, locking and severing devices in both catheter and endoscopic embodiments are disclosed that permit the delivery and application of suture clips directly in contact with or in close approximation to sutured tissue. The catheter or endoscopic versions incorporate a collet cage with a plurality of flexible collet fingers that captivate a suture clip ring and a suture clip plug for assembly with a suture. An outer sliding sleeve constrains the collet fingers when distally advanced to minimize potential trauma during delivery and assembly of the suture clip in close proximity to the stitched tissue. Proximal retraction of the sliding sleeve coupled with the distal advancement of a pusher against cam surfaces on the inner walls of the collet fingers causes the collet fingers to open. The catheter is designed to hold and assemble the suture clip in a first position and release the suture clip and sever the suture ends proximal to the suture clip in a second position. Single pusher two-step embodiments and double pusher three-step embodiments are disclosed. Suture clip designs with plugs having heads for use with the suture clip delivery catheter are also disclosed. A suture clip loading device for loading suture clip components into the delivery system as well as a threader for threading sutures into the suture clip systems are also disclosed. A method of loading, delivering and deploying suture clips is further disclosed.
