    • A method and apparatus is directed towards managing fail-over in a network. At least one back-up device is configured to process traffic if a fail-over condition occurs. The back-up device includes a physical interface. A logical interface X associated with the physical interface is monitored to determine if the fail-over condition has occurred. If it is determined that the fail-over condition has occurred on interface X, then the back-up device processes traffic for another logical interface Y, associated with the physical interface. Accordingly, logical interface Y may be unmonitored. According to one embodiment, if it is determined that the fail-over condition has occurred, the back-up device processes traffic for every logical interface associated with the physical interface.

    • An apparatus for a multi-domain computer system includes multiple virtual system domains, each having an associated, independent routing instance. A virtual switch is created to forward packets between the domains. The virtual switch is configured to operate substantially as if it were a physical layer-2 switch. The virtual switch and the virtual domains are connected together by virtual interfaces, where the virtual switch, the virtual domains, and the virtual interfaces are all created in software. Further, protocols such as ARP, IP, and/or IPv6 operate over the virtual interfaces in substantially the same way that they would over Ethernet. Also, each domain has a software driver that behaves like an Ethernet driver, and has a 48-bit Ethernet-like address that is used for the physical address.

    • A method for using Patricia tree and longest prefix match for policy-based route look-up is described. Five route classes are determined based on a source address, a source address length, a destination address, a destination address length, and an ingress interface. Route classes are prioritized based on their content. A prefix for the first two route classes includes source and destination information. A prefix for the third and fourth route classes includes source information only. A prefix for the fifth route class includes destination information only. Four different route keys are constructed based on the route classes. The route keys are stored in a Patricia tree structure. For routing a data packet, a longest prefix match look-up is performed for a route key in descending priority order for the route classes.

    • A robotic workstation includes apparatus for actuating one or more syringes. Each syringe has a cylinder and a plunger movable in the cylinder. A programmable robot has at least one syringe actuating device. The actuating device has a holder for holding and releasing a syringe cylinder and an actuator movable relative to the holder. A coupling couples the actuator to the plunger of the syringe such that, when the cylinder is held by the holder, movement of the actuator relative to the holder causes the plunger to move in the cylinder. A method of dispensing a material into a container includes robotically moving at least one syringe to a position for dispensing into a container. The plunger is robotically moved in the cylinder to dispense material from the syringe into the container. The workstation suitably includes a mixing apparatus for mixing materials in an array of containers at the workstation.
