    • In accordance with the present invention, a composition and method is provided that is effective in treating infections caused by microorganisms including, but not limited to, bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The present invention is effective in inhibiting the growth of bacteria such as Mycobacterium species including, but not limited to, Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex and M. tuberculosis. The present invention comprises a surface active copolymer, preferably an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide condensation product with the following general formula: HO(C.sub.2 H.sub.4 O).sub.b (C.sub.3 H.sub.6 O).sub.a (C.sub.2 H.sub.4 O).sub.b H wherein a is an integer such that the hydrophobe represented by (C.sub.3 H.sub.6 O) has a molecular weight of approximately 1200 to 15,000, and b is an integer such that the hydrophile portion represented by (C.sub.2 H.sub.4 O) constitutes approximately 1% to 50% by weight of the compound.
