    • Device for selectively separating and connecting a rotatable shaft, such as the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine, to a flywheel assembly of a friction clutch has a bearing in which the flywheel assembly is rotatable relative to the shaft, a friction plate non-rotatably connected to the shaft and having friction surfaces disposed at the opposite sides thereof, two pressure plates forming part of the flywheel assembly and each having a friction surface cooperating with one of the friction surfaces of the friction plates, the pressure plate being axially movably but non-rotatably connected to each other and, one of the pressure plates being held against axial movement relative to the bearing, operating means for moving the other of the pressure plates axially, spring means disposed on the friction plate between the connection to the shaft and the friction surfaces disposed thereon for biasing the friction plate in direction away from the axially-fixed pressure plate, and stop means for limiting the extent of axial movement of the friction surfaces of the friction plate.

    • An internal combustion engine with two crankshafts which are parallel to each other and are installed in a common casing. One of the crankshafts is driven whenever the engine is running and the other crankshaft is driven only when the engine is operated at maximum load. Prior to starting of the cylinders which rotate the other crankshaft, the other crankshaft is gradually accelerated to the speed of the one crankshaft by a friction clutch which is coaxial with the one crankshaft. Once the acceleration of the other crankshaft to the speed of the one crankshaft is completed, and the other crankshaft assumes a predetermined angular position with reference to the one crankshaft, the friction clutch is disengaged and such disengagement entails activation of a positive-engagement clutch between the two crankshafts. The friction clutch can constitute a component part of or it can be integrated into the positive-engagement clutch.

    • A torque transmitting assembly which can be installed between the engine and the change-speed transmission of a motor vehicle has a first flywheel which is driven by the crankshaft of the engine and a second flywheel which is movable axially of the first flywheel and can drive the transmission through the medium of a friction clutch. A damper is installed between the two flywheels to transmit torque while permitting some angular movement of the flywheel relative to each other. At least one antifriction bearing is installed between the two flywheels with some freedom of axial movement between its races. The races are stressed axially relative to each other in one direction in the engaged condition and in the opposite direction in response to a change in the condition of the clutch. The second flywheel is permanently biased toward or away from the first flywheel, depending upon the type of the clutch, and the disengagement of the clutch results in axial movement of the second flywheel relative to the first flywheel with attendant reduction of friction between the two flywheels in the engaged condition of the clutch.

    • A torsion damping assembly which is installed between the crankshaft of the engine and the input shaft of the change-speed transmission in a motor vehicle has two coaxial flywheels which are rotatable within the limits relative to each other against the opposition of two series-connected dampers. One of the dampers has an input element in the form of two coaxial discs which are affixed to one of the flywheels and bear against the radially outwardly extending arms of a flange-like torque transmitting output element constituting the input element of the other damper. The output element of the other damper is constituted by two discs which are disposed radially inwardly of the discs of the one damper, which directly or indirectly bear against the adjacent portion of the flange-like output element of the one damper, and which rotate with the other flywheel.
