The flywheel clutch is closed to begin regeneration.

    • The invention concerns a hybrid drive arrangement for vehicles, with an engine drive and with a flywheel storage drive, which includes a storage flywheel supported concentrically relative to the crankshaft for storing kinetic energy during such operations as braking operations of the vehicle. Both drives can be connected with the driving wheels of the vehicle by means of a common, preferably continuously variable, transmission. In order to obtain a faster response of the engine drive on suddenly occurring power demands and in order to achieve a more favorable design of the storage flywheel, there is to be provided in accordance with the invention, in addition to a storage flywheel, an engine flywheel associated with the reciprocating-piston internal combustion engine, which compensates for torque irregularities of the engine. The engine flywheel can be connected with a crankshaft by means of a first clutch and with the storage flywheel by means of at least one further clutch.

    • A vehicle having an internal combustion engine and flywheel includes a first clutch arranged between the flywheel and the vehicle drive shaft and a second clutch arranged between the flywheel and engine for selectively disconnecting the engine from the vehicle drive. A motor-generator is connected to the flywheel by a planetary gear train which includes a planetary gear carrier rigidly connected with the output drive shaft. during a first driving stage, the clutch between the flywheel and vehicle drive shaft is disconnected, such that the flywheel is coupled to the drive shaft through the planetary gear train. In a second driving stage, the clutch between the flywheel and vehicle output shaft is engaged to effect a direct connection between the flywheel and output shaft. In both driving stages, the vehicle can be driven by the engine, or by the motor-generator, or by the engine and motor-generator combined.

    • An electric drive mechanism for vehicles, especially buses with overhead trolley routes, which routes are provided with relatively short interruptions in the overhead trolley. The drive mechanism includes a flywheel two externally excited electric motors which are adapted to be switched over from prime mover operation to generator operation, and which motors are effective as a Ward-Leonard drive during flywheel operation. The first electric motor is constructed for half of a maximum drive power and the second electric motor is likewise constructed for half or for .sqroot.2/2 times the maximum drive power. Both electric motors are connected electrically in parallel during operation from the main electrical supply. The first and second motors are electrically connected in parallel during operation of the vehicle from the main electrical supply when a change-speed transmission is provided for connecting a drive shaft of one of the motors with driven vehicle wheels. A planetary gear transmission and a further transmission are provided for mechanically connecting the drive shaft of one of the motors with the second motor and with the flywheel.

    • One object of the present invention is to avoid loss of energy during deceleration of a vehicle. Another object is to decelerate an aircraft after its landing and to utilize the energy of said deceleration to taxi that aircraft or for its immediate take-off. This invention can be incorporated in a wheel within which a plurality of energy collectors, or spheres 8', can be housed circumferentially and be so connected as to spin, each about its own axis 20, and to accelerate under the impact of centrifugal force 60 produced by the rotation of said wheel. Each sphere 8' can include two hemispherical chambers 21 that form that sphere. The hemispherical chambers 21 can spin faster than the column of fluid that parallels centrifugal force 60 which acts on that column of fluid in an outward direction along line 22". The accelerated speed of hemispherical chambers 21 is the product of centrifugal 60 impacting on the corresponding fluid in the respective hemispherical chamber 21, because there line 22" becomes perpendicular to centrifugal force 60. The higher speed of hemispherical chambers 21, than that of the column of fluid in each sphere 8', could force some fluid from each column of fluid to exit from the outward aperture 22 and the same amount of fluid to enter the inward aperture 22. This fluid movement can take place through the connecting tunnels 22' and through the spaces around each hemispherical chamber 21. The Energy Wheel has, therefore, clear advantage over other devices that recover energy for immediate use because it can be of light weight and can maintain the necessary storage capacity with a few components simply combined.

    • A drive unit for a vehicle comprises an engine for driving a gear-shift transmission through an input shaft. The input shaft is also coupled via a gear assembly and a hydrodynamic coupling to a flywheel accumulator. During acceleration of the vehicle, kinetic energy stored in the flywheel flows to the input shaft of the transmission. When braking takes place, energy from the input shaft flows to the flywheel accumulator. The torque transmitted by the hydrodynamic coupling is adjustable. As the coupling slippage approaches a boundary of a slippage region in the coupling, a control device effects a switching of the gear-shift transmission whereby readjustment of the coupling slippage is achieved. Furthermore, the control device controls the gear-shift transmission--on the basis of whether "acceleration" or "braking" is demanded--such that the speed of rotation of a first coupling half in the coupling, as viewed from the direction of energy flow, is greater than the speed of rotation of another coupling half.

    • An energy storing flywheel assembly in which first and second reels are operatively connected by a flexible band, with the first and second reels capable of being rotated by first and second electric motors, and the second reel that can rotate either clockwise or counter clockwise through a clutch mechanism driving a flywheel. The flywheel that stores rotational energy is free to rotate independently of the second reel in a clockwise direction except when it is eccelerated to a predetermined maximum rate by the second reel. Acceleration of the flywheel occurs as the first motor drives the first reel at a constant rate to wind the band thereon. After the flywheel has reached the desired maximum rate of rotation the second reel is rotated to rewind the band thereon. Upon the rate of rotation of the flywheel decreasing to a predetermined minimum the above described operation is repeated.
