    • A method and device for testing a substantially cylindrical tool having an axis is performed by imparting a testing torque to the cylindrical tool. The tool is clamped in a vise. The tool has a driven end including a shank and a working end in opposed relation along the axis. The vise is configured to clamp the tool to prevent rotation of the tool about the axis. The shank is clamped in a chuck. The chuck has a adapter defining a void configured to engagingly receive a socket drive shaft. A torque wrench having a lever arm and a socket driver shaft is engaged by insertion of the socket drive shaft into the void. A torque is imparted to the cylindrical tool about its axis by suitably imparting a force on the lever arm. The quantum of torque imparted is measured based upon operation of the torque wrench.

    • In one version of this invention, a gear box has mounting means such as a pair of facing walls for mounting the bearings for the axles carrying the gears. Each mounting means supports its bearing with a different stiffness to compensate for different loads imposed by gears that are closer to one of the bearings supporting the axle than the other. The different stiffness of each bearing mounting equalizes load-induced shifts of the position of the bearings holding the axle. Such a mounting equalizes such shifts, allowing the axles to remain substantially parallel and the gears in alignment. Aligned gears better maintain line contact between individual gear teeth, thereby reducing wear and breakage of the teeth.

    • An improved longitudinal extractor utilizing a solvent for removing an entrained liquid from a carrier medium. The improved extractor includes a sprocket driven continuous chain-link conveyor mounted both in cooperation with an upper carrier medium chamber and a lower liquid collection chamber. The chain link conveyor has an upper run which moves the carrier medium past sparging solvent nozzles and a lower run which cleans the collection chamber by continuously scraping the bottom of the collection chamber free of sedimentation and hazardous build-up. The carrier medium is supported on a plurality of spaced-apart longitudinal members which allow the miscible fluid resulting from percolation removal to flow therebetween into the collection chamber. A plurality of spaced-apart collectors are arranged along the bottom of the collection chamber to provide for continuous removal of the miscible fluid from the collection chamber.

    • An apparatus for separating a partially miscible solvent from a contaminated water stream. The apparatus includes a fully enclosed containment vessel having an internal volume bounded by a plurality of walls which define the width, length and height of the internal volume. Devices for feeding the contaminated water, for discharging a solvent rich vapor stream, and for discharging a purified water stream are provided. A dam separates the internal volume into a phase separation zone and a falling film stripping zone with the dam located proximate one end of the internal volume. The dam includes a wall sealably disposed across the entire width of the internal volume and extended upward to a terminal location a distance from the bottom of the internal volume over a portion of the height of the internal volume. In use, the dam determines and maintains a maximum liquid level in the phase separation zone. Any additional liquid added to the phase separation zone results in a film of liquid flowing into the dam over the falling film stripping zone. The falling film stripping zone includes a surface whereon the film of liquid flows toward the device for discharging the purified water. Devices for heating the film of liquid and water contained in the phase separation zone are also provided. The phase separation zone includes a plurality of baffles disposed therein.
