    • A fuel injector assembly for a fuel injection system has a fuel pumping assembly with a fuel inlet and a fuel nozzle for causing fuel to be periodically pumped from the fuel inlet through the nozzle. The fuel injector assembly has an electro-hydraulic control valve associated with the fuel pumping means. The control valve comprises a housing, a first conduit formed in the housing and fluidly coupled to the fuel pumping means, a second conduit formed in the housing and fluidly coupled to a source of pressurized hydraulic fluid. A valve element is disposed in the housing and is reciprocable between a first position in which the first conduit is fluidly coupled to the second conduit and a second position in which the first conduit is fluidly isolated from the second conduit. The control valve also includes a pair of electrically energizable electromagnetic devices for controlling the reciprocation of the valve element. The components of the control valve are preferably composed of SAE 52100 steel so that the valve element remains latched in the first and second positions after electric current to the electromagnetic devices is turned off.

    • A rotor balancing arrangement is provided for use in a distribution valve to ensure hydrostatic balancing of a rotor located in the distribution valve. Some balancing arrangements provide areas equally spaced around the peripheral surface, each being exposed to the same pressure, however, they are limited to valves which rotate only through a limited arc of rotation. Other valves which rotate provide balancing grooves around portions of the peripheral surface but do not provide any control for the pressure that migrates axially in both directions along the peripheral surface of the rotor. In the subject arrangement, pressure fields of a predetermined size are located on a peripheral surface of a rotor circumscribing first and second outlet ports which open to opposite sides of the rotor. The size of the pressure fields is determined by the relationship of the diametrical clearance between the rotor and a bore with respect to the operating pressure of the system. This arrangement ensures that the differential forces acting on opposite sides of the rotor are minimized thus eliminating rotor sticking.

    • A control system for a fuel injector is disclosed. The control system has a nozzle member with at least one orifice, and a needle check valve. The needle check valve is recipratingly disposed to open and close the at least one orifice. The control system also has a control chamber located at the base end of the needle check valve, and a control valve movable to selectively drain and fill the control chamber. The control system further has an injector body, a first piston located within the injector body, and a second piston located within the injector body. The first piston is operatively connected to the control valve to move the control valve. The second piston is located a distance from the first piston to form a coupling chamber. The control system additionally has a partial-ball check valve associated with the coupling chamber to selectively replenish the coupling chamber.
