    • In the proposed fuel injection pump of the radial-piston pump type, the fuel injection rate can be controlled exactly by means of an electrically controlled valve which monitors a relief channel (66) of the pump working space (53) and which, by means of its closing time, determines the period of high-pressure injection during the pump-piston feed strokes. In order utilize the total length of the flanks of the drive cams as efficiently as possible, additionally injection adjustment is carried out as a result of the rotation of an essentially stationary part (13, 33) of the cam drive of the pump pistons (37) of the fuel injection pump relative to the rotary-driven part (8,9) of this cam drive. At the same time, on a fuel injection pump with a rotary-driven cam ring (9), there is a separation between a roller-carrying part (13) and a part (33) carrying pistons (37). However, these parts are then coupled to one another via a coupling arm (39), and the piston-carrier part (33) carrying the pistons (37) is thus free of transverse forces subjecting its mounting to stress.

    • A stepped rotation fuel distribution valve for receiving and conducting metered, pressurized fuel pulses to the combustion cylinders of a diesel engine is provided. The valve includes a fuel distribution shaft rotatably mounted in a valve housing. The shaft includes a fuel discharge port that is sequentially registrable with fuel distributing passages in the housing that ultimately lead to the diesel fuel injectors associated with the combustion cylinders of the engine. A drive mechanism, which may include a stepper motor, intermittently rotates the fuel distributor shaft so that the shaft discharge port dwells in registration with one of the fuel distributing passages at the time a pressurized pulse of fuel is discharged through the shaft discharge port. The drive mechanism may also include either a set of timing gears or a spring coupling to achieve the desired intermittent rotation. In all cases, the intermittent rotation of the fuel distribution shaft prevents the shaft from rotating at a time when the discharge of a highly pressurized fuel pulse applies a high side load to the shaft which in turn can generate high frictional forces between the fuel distribution shaft and the surrounding housing.

    • A fuel injection pump in which the fuel metering is performed with the aid of an electromechanical fuel metering device with fuel which is at low pressure, and the disposition of the injection with respect to the full compression stroke of the pump piston of the fuel injection pump can be varied by means of a variable withdrawal of fuel at the end of the compression stroke and the resupply of the withdrawn fuel during the intake stroke of the pump piston. A desired injection characteristic can thereby be attained, or a desired, specified portion of a cam elevation curve at which injection is supposed to take place can be selected.

    • A rotary distributor fuel pump for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine is provided with a rotor to meter and distribute fuel to the engine cylinders. The rotor axially reciprocates to vary fuel quantity and can be advanced or retarded relative the housing to provide timing through angular displacement of a ring gear which forms part of a planetary gear assembly driving the rotor. Fuel is pressurized by pistons mounted in the stationary housing and reciprocated radially in relation to the rotor under urging of a second rotating member having an eccentric inner bore. Axial displacement of the rotor is accomplished through conventional governor means.
