    • A control system for an automatic transmission, which receives the rotation of the engine through a fluid coupling, and which has a clutch applied when a forward running range is selected and released when a neutral range is selected and a range selecting mechanism for selecting a range. The control system includes a range detector for detecting the selected range, a hydraulic circuit and a control unit. The hydraulic circuit includes a hydraulic servo which is fed an oil pressure for applying the clutch and a manual valve movable between at least a forward range position for generating a forward range oil pressure and a neutral range position, by operation of the range selecting mechanism. A regulator valve regulates the forward range oil pressure to generate a regulated oil pressure. A solenoid valve is turned ON/OFF by the control unit to generate a signal oil pressure for switching a change-over valve between a first position feeding the forward range oil pressure to the hydraulic servo and a second position feeding the regulated oil pressure to the hydraulic servo. The control unit delays output of the signal solenoid valve, if a switching from the forward running range to the neutral range is detected by the range detector, so that the change-over valve remains in the second position until lapse of a set time period, and is then moved to a first position after the set time period has elapsed.

    • A control system for an automatic transmission, has a fluid transmission unit for transmitting the rotation of an engine to a speed change unit; a clutch adapted to be applied when a forward running range is selected to transmit the rotation of the fluid transmission unit to the transmission mechanism of the speed change unit; a stopped state detector for detecting a stopped state of a vehicle wherein the stopped state is defined as a forward running range being selected, the throttle opening being fully closed, the brake pedal being depressed, and the vehicle speed being substantially zero; engine speed detector for detecting the engine speed; clutch operation force generating means for generating the application force of the clutch; and a control unit. The control unit releases the clutch by reducing the engaging force of the clutch when the stopped state of the vehicle is detected by the stopped state detecting means. The engine RPM when the clutch is released is stored as an initial engine RPM in storage means so that a neutral ending engine RPM is set on the basis of the initial engine RPM. The clutch is applied by strengthening its application force if the stopped state of the vehicle is not detected when the clutch is released and if the engine RPM exceeds the neutral ending engine RPM.

    • A control system for an automatic transmission includes: an input clutch applied, responsive to selection of a forward running range, to transmit the rotation of an engine to a transmission mechanism; a hydraulic servo for selectively applying/releasing the input clutch; a stop state detector for detecting a stop state of a vehicle in terms of the selection of the forward running range, lack of vehicle speed, the release of an accelerator pedal and the depression of a brake pedal; starting operation detector for detecting an operation to start the vehicle in motion; application state detector for detecting the application state of the input clutch; and a controller for controlling oil pressure fed to the hydraulic servo on the basis of signals coming from the various detectors. If arrival at a predetermined released state is decided, the hydraulic servo is fed with a summed oil pressure which is the total of an initial application oil pressure and a release oil pressure, to initiate piston movement and start of engagement of the input clutch, and the oil pressure is thereafter gradually raised from the summed pressure on the basis of a predetermined pressure relationship. If a failure to arrive at the predetermined released state is decided, the oil pressure is gradually raised on the basis of the predetermined pressure relationship from the oil pressure which is fed to the hydraulic servo when a starting operation is detected.

At that time, the hydraulic pressure P.sub.C-1 of the input clutch C1 is gradually reduced by .DELTA.P.sub.CIR (P.sub.C-1 =P.sub.C-1 -.DELTA.P.sub.CIR) while the hydraulic pressure P.sub.B-1 of the hill-hold brake B1 is increased gradually so as to satisfy an equation P.sub.B-1 =K1+K2 X e where .DELTA.P.sub.cir is a change in hydraulic pressure which is required for gradually disengaging the first clutch C1, K1 is a hill-hold brake pressure at which braking resistance begins, K2 is hill-hold brake pressure producing a fully braked condition, and e is the input/output rotational-speed ratio of a torque converter Subsequently during start of vehicle movement, the hydraulic pressure P.sub.C-1 of the input clutch C1 is gradually increased (P.sub.C-1 =p.sub.C-1 +.DELTA.P.sub.C-1A) while the hydraulic pressure P.sub.B-1 of the hill-hold brake B1 is gradually decreased (P.sub.B-1 ==P.sub.B-1-.DELTA.P.sub.B-1) until the ratio of the rotational speed N.sub.C-1 of the first clutch C1 becomes less than a rotational speed N.sub.C-1E corresponding to the clutch being almost engaged .DELTA.P.sub.C-1A and .DELTA.P.sub.B-1 are incremental values proportional to accelerator depression so that a delay in starting is reduced in accordance with driver demand.
