    • An axle lift mechanism (100) is used on a vehicle having a normally lowered axle/wheel assembly to automatically lift and maintain the assembly in a raised position when the vehicle is not heavily loaded. A trailing arm (62) connected to the vehicle axle (12) is pivotably coupled at one end to the vehicle frame (68) and mounts an air spring (26) at its opposing end to transmit load to the axle (12) when the air spring (26) is inflated. The lift mechanism (100) includes a flexible strap (102) secured at one end to the trailing arm (62) and wound around a pivotable cam (108). The opposing end of the strap (102) is coupled to a rod (128) adjustably engaged with a spring cup (130). A tapered coil spring (152) coaxial with the rod (128) bears against the spring cup (130) and exerts forces on the rod (128) and strap (102) sufficient to rotate the cam (108) and lift the trailing arm (62) and axle (12) to a raised position when the air spring (26) pressure is relieved. The spring cup (130) and tapered coil spring (152) are enclosed in a tubular housing (146) and a wear plate (154) is mounted to the outer spring cup surface. The flexible strap (102) comprises spaced apart cords (156) embedded in flexible polyurethane or other suitable material (158) and formed by winding a Kevlar or other suitable cable between a pair of sleeves (160).

    • An axle lift mechanism for use in a vehicle having a suspension system which is mounted to the vehicle for movement between a load-bearing and nonload-bearing relationship. The lift mechanism has a toggle linkage pivotably coupled to the frame and to the suspension system for movement of the axle between load-bearing and nonload-bearing positions. The toggle linkage is biased to the nonload-bearing position through a compression coil spring which is mounted in a housing and is received within a spring cup within the housing. A wear plate, preferably made of a lubricating plastic material, is mounted on the spring cup between the wear plate and the housing to avoid wear between the housing wall and spring cup. The coil spring is tapered between one end which bears against an end of the housing and the spring cup end so that the coil spring does not rub against the housing wall during oscillation of the spring. The toggle mechanism can include a conventional rigid rod or a flexible strap which is mounted coaxially within the coil spring.

    • A fluid-operated combination diaphragm spring brake has a tamper-resistant connection between a head and a flange case which together form a spring chamber housing a power spring. The head has an annular flange and an axial rim, and the flange case has an annular flange and an axial rim, The flanges of the head and the flange case and at least one of the rims of the head and the flange case define an annular recess.     • An air-operated combination diaphragm spring brake has a tamper-resistant connection between a head (46) and a spring side of a flange case (18) which together form a spring chamber (16) housing a power spring (66). The head (46) has an annular rim (70), and the flange case has an annular flange (78) with a diaphragm (48) sandwiched therebetween. A plurality of tabs (102) on one flange rotate into L-shaped channels (94) to lock the head to the flange case with a bayonet style engagement. An alternative embodiment employs threads (112, 114) on the head and adapter flanges to seal the spring chamber. A further embodiment seals the head to a cast flange case using a threaded hoop 116 fitted over the flange case to engage the threads on the head flange.

    • A clutch pulley assembly primarily designed for use with electromagnetic clutches for driving air conditioning compressors on automobiles and the like wherein the component parts of the clutch pulley assembly are fabricated from stampings with a reduction in the amount of machinery required to complete the device. The method of making and assembling the structure is part of the invention and includes the press forming of a web disc for supporting pulley grooves from sheet steel having desirable magnetic properties to produce an annular flange portion thereon at the outer edge thereof and extending substantially perpendicular thereto, then punching a central hub receiving aperture in the disc and then mounting the central aperture of said disc on a central hub made from a tube section. A die forming method of manufacturing a pulley groove is also disclosed. A section of steel tubing is cut to length, this section is press formed by axially moving dies, and then the pulley groove is completed by both axially and radially moving forming dies of multi-segment type. The pulley groove thus formed is then pressed upon the machined outer flange surface of the web disc in which magnetic flux blocking slots have also been punched.
