    • A system for forcefully igniting a spray of fuel injected into combustion chambers of a diesel engine during engine starting, in place of a conventional glow plug preheating system. The system comprises a plurality of spark plugs located within the respective combustion chambers of the diesel engine and an ignition means for sequentially igniting each of the spark plugs. The system is operated simultaneously with an engine starter motor and at least until the engine has achieved a spontaneous ignition state or most preferably until a fixed interval of time after the engine has achieved the spontaneous ignition state. Detection of the spontaneous ignition state is based on (a) combustion pressure; (b) engine speed; (c) oxygen concentration; (d) engine starter motor actuation (e) exhaust gas temperature; or (f) engine cooling water temperature.

    • An internal combustion engine ignition system comprises: (a) a capacitive discharge ignition device having a voltage transformer which converts a low DC voltage into a corresponding AC voltage and boosts and rectifies the AC voltage into a first higher DC voltage for discharging each of the spark plugs sequentially, boosts and rectifies the AC voltage into a second higher DC voltage for generating arc-sustaining ignition energy, and rectifies the AC voltage into a third higher DC voltage; (b) an ignition signal generating means which generates and outputs an ignition signal whenever the engine rotates through a predetermined engine rotational angle offset by an angular interval determined by the engine speed and engine load; (c) an ignition coil means having a primary winding and secondary winding, one end of the primary winding thereof receiving the first DC voltage from the DC-DC converting means, the other end of the primary winding thereof being grounded when the ignition signal is received from the ignition signal generating means, one end of the secondary winding receiving the second DC voltage from the DC-DC converting means; and (d) a plurality of spark plugs, each located within a corresponding engine cylinder and having a gap between electrodes and one end thereof being connected to the DC-DC converting means for receiving the second and third DC voltages when the ignition signal is received by the ignition coil.

    • A spark ignition fuel injection reciprocatory internal combustion engine with dual induction system has within a cylinder head a primary intake passage to direct air fuel mixture charge into a cylinder to swirl therein and a secondary intake passage to direct air charge into the cylinder in such a direction as to impede the swirling motion of the air fuel mixture charge, thereby to maintain the volumetric efficiency of the engine at a sufficiently high level. A fuel injector is so positioned as to discharge fuel into the primary intake passage. An air flow sensor is provided upstream of primary and secondary throttle valves to detect the total of flow of induction air fed to the engine so that fuel is discharged at a rate proportional to the total induction air flow. Under engine operating conditions when only the primary throttle valve opens, air fuel mixture charge will swirl at a sufficiently high rate as to enhance evaporation and dispersion of fuel droplets. Under engine operating conditions when both the primary and secondary throttle valves open, the air fuel mixture charge issuing from the primary intake passage is enriched and air charge from the secondary intake passage impedes swirling motion of enriched air fuel mixture charge from the primary intake passage to enhance evaporation and dispersion of fuel droplets.

    • A spark ignition fuel injection reciprocatory internal combustion engine with dual induction system is provided which has within a cylinder head a primary intake port passage to direct air charge into a cylinder to swirl therein and a secondary intake port passage to direct air charge into the cylinder in such a direction as to impede and reduce the swirling motion of the air charge issuing from the primary intake port passage. An intake valve, including a valve stem and a valve head, is reciprocably mounted within the cylinder head, and an annular wall or tube is fixedly positioned in a bore in the cylinder head. The primary intake port passage communicates with the exterior of this tube and the secondary intake port passage communicates with the interior of the tube. This tube extends to a position closely adjacent to, or in engagement with, the valve head of the intake valve when the valve is in the closed position. A fuel injector, mounted to the cylinder head, discharges fuel into the secondary intake port passage toward the central portion of the head and synchronization with the opening of the intake valve so that the fuel issuing from the fuel injector will impinge upon the valve head and then disperse radially outwardly toward the periphery of the valve head. An air flow sensor is provided upstream of primary and secondary throttle valves to detect the total of flow of induction air fed to the engine so that fuel is discharged at a rate proportional to the total induction air flow.
