    • A control system for a hydraulic tandem pump assembly including a primary pump for supplying fluid under pressure to a power-assisted steering device and a secondary pump for supplying fluid under pressure to a hydraulic motor of an engine cooling fan, which pumps are mounted on a common drive shaft for rotation therewith. The control system includes an electrically operated flow quantity control valve disposed within a communication passage between the secondary pump and the hydraulic motor to bypass fluid under pressure discharged from the secondary pump into an inlet passage connecting a fluid reservoir to the secondary pump, a temperature sensor arranged to detect an ambient temperature of a prime engine of the vehicle for producing therefrom an output signal indicative of the ambient temperature, and an electric control apparatus connected to the sensor to control an electric current applied to the control valve in response to the output signal from the sensor in such a manner that the control valve is conditioned to bypass a large part or the entirety of fluid under pressure discharged from the secondary pump into the inlet passage when the ambient temperature of the engine is below a predetermined value.

    • A variable-displacement vane pump apparatus is composed of a pump part and a switching valve. The pump part is comprised of a housing, a cam ring, a rotor, plural vanes, side plates, two pairs of intake and exhaust ports formed on the side plates, discharge pressure chambers connecting with the discharge ports, and an intake chamber connected with the intake ports. The pump part is divided into first and second pump portions, and only one of the pump portions is activated by the operation of the switching valve when the load pressure is low. Under such condition, the fluid discharged from the particular pump portion is returned to its intake port. Also, the flow rate of the operation fluid discharged from the pump is adjusted by the flow control valve by returning part of pressurized fluid into the inlet ports. A fluid supplied from a reservoir is energized two times by supercharge effect utilizing the returned fluid from the switching valve and the returned fluid from the flow control valve. The vane pump is further provided with a special arrangement to lower the pressure at the bottoms of slits receiving the vanes at the time period when the slits located in the particular pump portion, thereby reducing the energy loss.

    • A vane type pump with a variable capacity for power steering devices is provided with a movable ring received and radially movable in a closed cylindrical bore of a pump housing. A spring acts on the movable ring to deflect the axis of the movable ring from the axis of a rotor, which is rotated to move vanes along an internal bore of the movable ring. A sealing pin and a valve element are provided at diametrically opposite sides of the movable ring and define first and second pressure chambers around the movable ring. The first pressure chamber receives pressurized fluid from a part of the internal bore of the movable ring and conducts the pressurized fluid into the second pressure chamber through a throttle, which is defined by the valve element and a part of a circumferential external surface of the movable ring. The throttle generates a pressure difference between the first and second pressure chambers, and the pressure difference acts on the movable ring to move the same against the force of the spring. The pump is further provided with a solenoid operated actuator for adjusting the position of the valve element, and a relief valve.

    • A control system for a power steering device of a vehicle, wherein the rotational angular position of a steering wheel, the vehicle driving speed and the steering torque applied to the steering wheel are detected and processed by a digital computer. The computer selects one of plural control values stored in a memory device based upon the detected steering torque and the detected vehicle speed and outputs the selected one of the control values along with solenoid selection data which is determined based upon the detected rotary angular position data. An electric current having a value corresponding to the selected one of the control values is applied from a solenoid drive circuit to one of a pair of solenoids, so that a four-way open center type solenoid valve having the solenoids controls the supply and exhaust of pressurized fluid to and away from a power cylinder of the power steering device in accordance with the detected vehicle driving speed and the detected steering torque.
