    • A method for the production of a microsphere without use of a dispersion stabilizer is disclosed which permits the microsphere to be produced in the form of discrete particles readily treatable for purification. The method which produces this microsphere comprises the steps of dissolving in an organic solvent such as an alcohol a monomer mixture including an ethylenically unsaturated amide and 10 to 70% by weight, based on 100% by weight of said monomer mixture, of a cross-linking agent thereby preparing a mixed solution, keeping said mixed solution at a temperature in the range of from 30.degree. to 95.degree. C., and adding thereto at least one initiator selected from the group consisting of peroxide type initiators and azo type initiators in an amount such as to be contained therein at a final concentration in the range of from 1.times.10.sup.-5 to 8.times.10.sup.-2 mol/liter thereby inducing polymerization of said monomer mixture. The microsphere consequently obtained can be used as one kind of a substrate most suitable for the preparation of an affinity adsorbent serving ideally as a filler for use in affinity chromatography.

    • A novel agent for preventing and healing constipation which heals the symptom of constipation very effectively and entails absolutely no side effect is provided. This agent for preventing and healing constipation is formed by containing a hydrogen of a polyvalent metal salt of alginic acid possessing a spherical or ovaloid shape having a short diameter in the range of 1-10 mm and an aspect ratio (long diemter/short diameter) in the range of 1-25. The hydrogel of a polyvalent metal salt of alginic acid is obtained by dropping an aqueous solution of sodium alginate into an aqueous solution of a polyvlant metal salt. It is optionally stored in water and/or a hydrogen compound of a natural compound possessing a free acid group capable of reacting and sequestering a basic compound.

    • An adsorbent is disclosed which is formed either by coating an adsorption mass such as active carbon with a gel-like substance such as the dibasic metallic salt of a macromolecular polycarboxylic acid, soybean curd, jelly, konjak, agar, perilla, gelidium jelly, or chitosanoxalic acid salt gel and subsequently subjecting the coated basis to a freezing treatment or by effecting the coating with the gel-like substance already made to contain a frost damage preventing substance such as glycerin and subsequently depriving the coated basis of the frost damage preventing substance. This adsorbent, on being brought into direct contact with foodstuffs or ingested directly into the digestive system, effects highly efficient removal by adsorption of such food additive, feed additive, agricultural pesticide, food poisoning substance, allergen, heavy metal or highly poisonous organic compound as are suffered to adhere to or exist in the foodstuffs, such surplus nutrients as persist in the digestive system, such oligomers and additives as are contained in liquors, such metabolites of alcohol as are formed in the digestive system after assimilation of alcohol, such harmful substances as hydroperoxides of unsaturated fatty acids as are suffered to exist in oils and fats, and such components of offensive odor as emanate from fish.
