    • There is described herein a ligating clip applier which contains: a handle assembly; a jaw assembly connected to the handle assembly and containing a shaft and a pair of jaws. The shaft defines a longitudinal axis which lies in a central horizontal plane. A magazine of clips is stored on one side of the plane. The jaws are positioned so that they are on the opposite side of the plane. This configuration allows the clip to be loaded into the jaws across the plane, resulting in greater visibility of the clips as they are loaded into the jaws. Further, there is provided a jaw closure mechanism operable in connection with the jaws of this device so that the jaws contact the legs of a ligating clip first distally and then proximally. Thereafter the jaws are parallel at least once during closure, and the closure of the clip legs is, indeed, distal and then proximal. This improved procedure insures that in virtually all instances, the angle included between the clip legs at the crown is 0.degree.. Motion of the clip feeding and jaw closing mechanisms are accomplished without lost motion, via a pair of interengaged mechanisms connected by a single tension spring to one another, and operating separately from the body of the device. This configuration results in a more efficient, easier to operate more reliable clip applying device.

    • A surgical device is described for assisting a surgeon in suturing bodily tissue using a curved, surgical needle with a suture filament attached. The surgical device comprises a handle, an elongated shaft having a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis extending in between. The device further comprises a stationary arm having a first holder fixedly attached to and extending from the distal end of the shaft, and used for operationally engaging with the needle. The device also has a movable arm having a second holder extending from the distal end of the shaft and rotatable around the longitudinal axis of the device. The movable arm also is operationally engageable with the needle. An actuator is provided for cooperatively actuating the first and second holders, so as to be able to pass a needle along a circular path transverse to the longitudinal axis of the device through the tissue, and thus place the suture filament into the tissue.

    • Self contained radio transmitting state estimator modules are mounted on power conductors on both sides of power transformers in electrical substations and on power conductors at various places along electrical transmission lines. They are electrically isolated from ground and all other conductors. These modules are capable of measuring current, voltage, frequency and power factor (or the fourier components thereof) the temperature of the conductor, and the temperature of the ambient air. The modules transmit these parameters to local receivers. The receivers are connected by an appropriate data transmission link, to a power control center which allows determination of the state of the power system. Appropriate control signals are transmitted back to the electrical switchgear of the system to bring it to the appropriate optimum state. Direct local control may also be effected, for example, the prevention of overloading a transformer. A "donut" state estimator module comprises a novel hot stick operated hinge clamp and a novel voltage sensor which measures the current between an isolated capacitor plate and ground. The donut measures the fourier components of voltage and current over a number of cycles and transmits the components to the local receiver. The local receiver derives the desired electrical measurements such as voltage, current, power factor, power, and reactive power and transmits them to local or remote control stations. Up to 15 donut modules may transmit on a single channel to a single local receiver. Each transmits at intervals which are an integral number. The intervals between transmissions of all donuts do not have a common factor and the average interval is the desired transmission rate. Each donut uses the zero crossover of current of its conductor to establish its transmission interval. The system is self-calibrating using known reference signals within the donut module.

    • A strain meter includes first and second blocks clamped to a rotating shaft with a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) rigidly affixed to the first block and a displacement arm rigidly affixed to the second block. A LVDT core is attached to one end of the displacement arm and disposed to be movable without contact through the center of the LVDT. A flexible cable is connected between the displacement arm and the LVDT to control the radial position of the LVDT core. A vertical stabilizing bar is connected between the blocks and includes a cutout section adjacent the second block to allow for necessary flexibility for the second block to follow shaft motion. Information signals generated by the LVDT are telemetered off the shaft to a receiver.

    • A medication delivery pen includes a housing having opposing proximal and distal ends. An actuator is disposed in the proximal end of the housing for setting and administering a dosage of medication. The pen also includes a medication-containing cartridge assembly having a cartridge with a pierceably sealed distal end, an open proximal end removably attachable to the distal end of the housing, and a piston in sliding fluid tight engagement within the cartridge. A drive mechanism is coupled between the actuator and the cartridge to exert an axial force on the piston to inject the set dosage of medication. The actuator triggers the drive mechanism to administer the injection of medication held in the cartridge. A processor is coupled to the actuator to determine a value equal to the dosage set by the actuator. A memory device is coupled to the processor to store at least the dosage value determined by the processor. A display is located on the housing and coupled to the processor for displaying information provided by the processor. In a first state the actuator engages with the drive mechanism to deliver the medication and in a second state is disengaged from the drive mechanism. In its second state, the actuator serves as a user adjustable input for changing and setting mode parameters of at least one preselected mode of the pen.
