    • An apparatus for treating regurgitation of blood through a diseased heart valve having at least two leaflets includes an occluding member configured to be positioned within the diseased heart valve so that at least a portion of the occluding member is positioned adjacent to one of the at least two leaflets. The at least one portion of the occluding member contacts at least one surface of the at least one leaflet. The occluding member is dimensioned so that the at least one leaflet abuts the at least one surface of the occluding member. The apparatus further includes a suspending wire operatively attached to the occluding member and configured to facilitate positioning of the occluding member within the heart valve. The suspending wire includes an anchoring portion having a coiled shape. The anchoring portion is configured to secure the suspending wire to at least one of a blood vessel and a heart wall surrounding a heart chamber.

    • An apparatus for interventional treatment of atherosclerosis at a vascular bifurcation includes structure for receiving a first guidewire and a second guidewire. An exit for the second guidewire is located in a central section of the structure. A first balloon portion is secured to the structure so a proximal end is located adjacent the exit. A second balloon portion is secured to the structure so a distal end is located adjacent the exit on a side of the exit opposite the first balloon portion. An annular gap is defined between the proximal end of the first balloon portion and the distal end of the second balloon portion. The annular gap, at a radial outermost location relative to the structure, has a width that is equal to or less than a width of the annular gap at a radially innermost location relative to the structure. The apparatus also includes an expandable stent that is mountable about the first and second balloon portions.

    • A ventricular assist device comprises a sheet of hydraulically actuated material that can be affixed to prescribed locations on the surface of the heart to assist areas of the heart that do not contract normally. The material is comprised of a network of contractible unit cells that individually contract when fluid is pumped into them. These unit cells are connected together in a network that causes the sheet to contract radially inward. This contraction causes the sheet to transmit forces to the heart to assist in its natural contraction. A sensing function coordinates the contraction of the sheet with the contraction of the heart. The change in shape of the device is accomplished by distributing pressurized fluid throughout the spaces of the device by way of a network of channels. When pressure is removed from the fluid system, it assumes a deenergized “rest” position in which it does not transmit any forces to the surface of the heart. This property of the device prevents the device from inhibiting the heart's natural contractions in the event of a failure of the device or a loss of hydraulic power.
