摘要： A process for forming an oil-sorbent composition of matter with bound combinations of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) utilizes a low-temperature extrusion process. The SBS, or both materials, may be in the form of multitudes of granules. In certain preferred embodiments, the combination is 10-30% by weight and the SBS is about 30% styrene and manufactured without talc. The composition of matter can be extruded into a solid, compliant body for use in a product for absorbing oil. The material can be extruded, in one preferred embodiment, into an extended cylinder body having an axial hole.

摘要： A water- and oil-porous sack contains a hydrophobic, compliant, oil-absorbent, copolymer material arranged in a number of bodies that (a) are generally cylindrical, (b) are porous, (c) have at least one passageway parallel to the axis of the cylinder, and (d) are dimensioned to float on water with the axis parallel to the surface of the water. The material is formed with a binder in a novel extrusion process. The inventive sack is sewn to create a number of pockets, and the seams create fold lines that permit the sack to dip below the water to allow debris to pass. The inventive sacks can be suspended below a storm drain and used in conjunction with known catchbasin inserts.

摘要： A storm-drain insert has separate collection systems for trash and oil or other hydrocarbons. A tilted grate separates trash from oily inlet water and directs the trash to a separate basket, and the water flows through a corrugated, flexible canister containing a hydrophobic, compliant, oil-absorbent, copolymer material arranged in a number of bodies having high surface area. Preferably, the material is formed with a binder in a novel extrusion process. The inserts can be suspended in a storm drain adjacent to a curb inlet.

摘要： One or more water- and oil-porous containers or sacks are made of a pair of mesh sheets affixed together and stiffened around their perimeter. The sacks can be partially filled with a multitude of tubular bodies made of an oil-entrapping polymer, which have their longest dimension parallel to an axial hole. A preferred material is composed of a combination of SBS and EPDM, formed by an extrusion technique, to create highly fissured generally cylindrical bodies. The sacks may be deployed in areas where oil is floating on water, such as where oil has spilled from tankers on oceans, seas, lakes, or rivers. When the bodies are afloat, oily water can pass through the axial holes of and around the bodies, maximizing the surface area contacted by the oil and minimizing gel blocking. After a time sufficient for the bodies in the sacks to adsorb oil, the sacks can be collected. Various deployment and collection methods are disclosed. After collection, the oil may be recycled; alternatively the sacks may be incinerated, to recover the energy content for use as power while disposing of the oil.

The bracket can support the filter system beneath the grate of a storm drain without the need for the filter system to be attached to the grate. The grate can be lifted out of the storm drain separately from the filter unit, which allows the filter system to be lifted without the added weight of the grate. When the grate has been lifted out of the way, a suitable fastener structure can be attached to the bracket of the filter system to make the use of mechanical lifting devices more convenient. The bracket can be manufactured to known dimensions, or it can be offered from among a set of brackets that are pre-configured for known storm drain dimensions or as a standard bracket that can be modified to fit the dimensions of a particular storm drain.

摘要： A modular insert for curb-inlet storm drains creates a composite collection system for trash and for oil or other hydrocarbons and related chemicals. A hopper contains a multitude of irregular, macroscopic fragments of a hydrophobic, compliant, oil-absorbent, copolymer material having high surface area. Preferably, the material is formed with a binder in a novel extrusion process. The fragments absorb and retain permanently a high quantity of oil and other chemicals passing through the hopper, while permitting a high water flow-through rate. The fragments are held in place by a removable bottom plate, which allows replacement of the filtering fragments, and an internal basket. Trash and debris are collected in the internal basket. The hopper is configured to be suspended in a storm drain adjacent to a curb inlet on a bracket and can be installed or serviced through a conventional manhole entry. The hopper has a side cutout that permit lateral overflow from one of the modular units to an adjacent one.
