    • A modular insert for curb-inlet storm drains creates a composite collection system for trash and for oil or other hydrocarbons and related chemicals. A hopper contains a multitude of irregular, macroscopic fragments of a hydrophobic, compliant, oil-absorbent, copolymer material having high surface area. Preferably, the material is formed with a binder in a novel extrusion process. The fragments absorb and retain permanently a high quantity of oil and other chemicals passing through the hopper, while permitting a high water flow-through rate. The fragments are held in place by a removable bottom plate, which allows replacement of the filtering fragments, and an internal basket. Trash and debris are collected in the internal basket. The hopper is configured to be suspended in a storm drain adjacent to a curb inlet on a bracket and can be installed or serviced through a conventional manhole entry. The hopper has a side cutout that permit lateral overflow from one of the modular units to an adjacent one.

    • The present invention relates generally to a system for use in filtering a variety of environmental substances, and more particularly to a method and apparatus for filtering such substances as soil, sediment, and debris from such things as water runoff that may be entering storm drains or catch basins for example. The filter may be comprised of a base and a readily visible top portion. A storm sewer grate may then be inserted within the filter and placed in an opening of the inlet. Water may then be filtered, through either or both the top portion and/or through the base, before entering the inlet. The top portion functions as a visual aid, thereby allowing workers, inspectors and equipment operators to easily locate the storm sewer grate.

    • A floating debris removal system has a bypass or overflow grate that is hinged at the top and positioned to swing downstream under certain conditions. The grate is fastened with a shear ring that will break when sufficient force is generated against the grate by the flow of overflow water and debris through the system. A plow-shaped member pivots off upwardly as flow increases. The member has a plow-shaped blade that spreads the flow across the inlet of the trap of the system to reduce the velocity of the flow. The shape and weight of the blade are selected for optimal function under a range of water levels and flow velocities, and can be altered to perform best for different installations. Debris pits are provided before or after the traps of the system to collect small suspended debris that is not removed by the traps. The pits are sized and configured to slow the velocity of the flow of that the suspended debris settles into the pits. Guide pits on the traps ride in vertical rails to facilitate loading and removal of the traps in the system, while a third plate-like rail on the face of a service ladder guides the downstream end of the traps, while simplifying the overall construction, minimizing surfaces on which dirt can collect, and conserving space.

    • A drainwater treatment system positionable within the vertical passageway of a drainage system utilizes a catch basin for accepting drainwater which flows downwardly into the drainage system and a filter-supporting section disposed alongside the catch basin. The filter-supporting section accepts drainwater which flows therein from the catch basin and permits drainwater to flow downwardly therethrough. First and second filters containing a hydrophobic material are positioned within the filter-supporting section for filtering contaminants from the drainwater flowing downwardly therethrough, and an overflow is associated with the catch basin and the filter-supporting section through which drainwater is permitted to exit the treatment system and bypass the first and second filters when the flow rate of drainwater into the system exceeds the rate at which drainwater is permitted to flow downwardly through the first and second filters.
