    • A package for storing and shipping a heavy object, such as a compressor for an air-conditioning system, includes a base formed from a rigid material and having recesses which receive feet at the bottom of the object and flaps which fold over the recesses and capture the feet in them, thus securing the object to the base. The package also includes a box having side walls and top and bottom walls. The base, with the object secured to it, fits into the box with the base against the bottom wall of the box and the object surrounded by the side walls of the box. A sleeve fits into the box between the base and the top wall and holds the base against the bottom wall. A tray fits within the sleeve above the object where it rigidifies the sleeve, enabling the sleeve to maintain its cross-sectional configuration, and further serves as a receptacle for accessory items.

    • A corner protector, which is formed entirely from paper honeycomb material, fits between the corner of a container and the corner of a relatively rigid object in the container and thereby positions the object within the container and protects it from impacts to which the container may be subjected. The corner protector, when in its assembled configuration, has at least three panels which are arranged perpendicular to each other. Being formed from paper honeycomb material, each panel has inner and outer facer sheets and honeycomb cells interposed between the facer sheets, with the axes of the cells being perpedicular to the facer sheets. The three panels share a common outer facer sheet, with the first and third panels being joined to the second panel along fold lines in that facer sheet. However, the inner facer sheets of the three panels are clearly distinguishable by reason of slit lines that separate them. Moreover, in the region of the slit lines the honeycomb cells are crushed such that the inner facer sheets are beveled downwardly to the fold lines. The panels abut along the beveled surfaces of their inner facer sheets. An edge protector has at least two panels which are joined through a common outer facer sheet and are beveled at their inner facer sheets opposite a fold line in the common outer facer sheet. This permits the protector to be folded over an edge of the object with the inner facer sheets presented inwardly toward the object.

    • A load-carrying pallet includes a rectangular deck and blocks arranged under the deck to provide runners along its side edges. More blocks are located between the runners, yet are spaced from them to support the center portion of the deck, the endmost of these center blocks being located along the end edges of the deck. Between the ends of the center blocks and the runners are entry slots which extend beneath the deck for the full length of the deck for accepting the tines of a forklift at either end of the deck. Moreover, the center blocks are arranged to provide cross channels which are perpendicular to the entry slots, and these channels align with side entry blocks in the runners. The side entry blocks permit the tines of a forklift to enter the cross channels and pass beneath the deck from either side edge of the deck, thus providing the pallet with the capability of four-way entry. Some of the blocks may be formed in an extrusion process from a cellulose material which is bonded together in a tubular configuration by a resin. Others of the blocks may be cut from paperboard honeycomb material.

    • A package for holding and protecting a can includes a six-wall, eight-corner box and inserts in the box where they capture the can at each end of the box. Each insert includes a paper honeycomb panel that corresponds in shape to the cross-sectional shape of the interior of the box and a rigid backing that is attached firmly to one face of the panel. The backing is die cut to provide a segment that corresponds in shape to the ends of the can, with the cut extending partially into the honeycomb cells as well. The cut segment of the backing is forced into the underlying honeycomb cells to provide a pocket that snugly receives an end of the can and a pad behind the pocket. Multiple inserts may be derived from a slab having intermittent cuts at which individual inserts may be detached.

    • Matched and mated machine components, such as those on which the scrolls of scroll-type compressors are located, are fitted together, yet physically isolated from each other, by separators that are formed from corrugated paperboard. Each separator has a planar peripheral portion, which lies between and faces end surfaces on the mating components, and fingers which fit between the interfitting segments. The sets of mating machine components are placed on pads formed from paper honeycomb material, and these pads have pockets which receive one component of each set and prevent the components from shifting laterally. The pockets are derived by die cutting the honeycomb material through one of its facer sheets and then crushing the cells that lie within the cut. The pads with the sets of mating, yet isolated, components on them are stacked one upon the other. A tray lies beneath the stack and a cover fits over it and telescopes with respect to the tray to completely enclose the stack.
