    • Polybutylene terephthalates having a narrow molecular weight distribution, a low carboxyl group content and an intrinsic viscosity of from 0.2 to 1.4 dl/g can be continuously produced by transporting a molten reaction mixture of terephthalic acid mono- and/or bis-(hydroxybutyl) ester or low viscosity polybutylene terephthalate at 160.degree. to 300.degree. C., together with a heated inert gas, in a diphasic annular stream through an externally heated spiral reaction tube (of substantially constant pitch) having a diameter of from 3 to 100 mm and a diameter/length ratio of from 1:400 to 1:2000 by the maintenance of a pressure difference between the beginning and the end of the reaction tube, under conditions such that the absolute pressure, determined at the point of entry of the reaction mixture into the tube, is from 1 to 100 bar and the viscosity of the annular stream is from 1 to 10,000 poises (determined at the reaction temperature), and a circular stream between the surface of the melt and the wall of the tube is produced by the curvature of the tube and a stream of gas flowing at a velocity of from 20 to 300 m/sec to accelerate the transport of material between the melt and the inert gas, whereby the reaction takes place in the liquid phase and/or at the melt/gas interface.

    • A process for the production of modified polypropylene particles by polymerizing vinyl monomers in aqueous suspension wherein (a) an aqueous suspension is prepared which, based on 100 to 2000 parts by weight of water, contains 100 parts by weight of polypropylene particles, 4 to 30 parts by weight of a polar vinyl monomer and based on 100 parts by weight of the monomer, 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of a radical chain polymerization initiator which has a half life of at least 2 h at a temperature of 80.degree. to 135.degree. C. and 10 to 1200 parts by weight of an organic solvent which is capable of swelling polypropylene, of which the boiling point at 760 Torr is at least 100.degree. C. and which is miscible with the monomers in any proportion; (b) the aqueous suspension is heated without decomposition of the initiator, the polypropylene being swollen and the monomer penetrating into the polypropylene, after which (c) the aqueous suspension is kept at temperatures of .gtoreq.85.degree. C. until polymerization of the monomer has ceased. The modified polypropylene is used to improve the mechanical properties of unmodified, optionally glass-fibre-reinforced polypropylene.

    • The present invention is concerned with thermoplastic terephthalic acid copolyesters which crystallize more rapidly than homopolyethylene terephthalate and are based on a diol component which is about 98 to 99.9 mol % of ethylene glycol and the balance 2-ethylhexane-1,3-diol. The acid component may be up to about 10.0 mol % of other than terephthalic acid or its dimethyl ester.This invention is also concerned with a process of synthesizing such copolyesters by esterifying or transesterifying the acid and diol components between about 150.degree. and 250.degree. C. in the presence of appropriate catalysts. The condensation product may be subject to polycondensation at about 200.degree. to 300.degree. C. under reduced pressure in the presence of esterification catalysts. In a preferred embodiment the 2-ethylhexane-1,3-diol is added after the initial reaction between the acid component and the ethylene glycol and preferably after the degree of polycondensation is greater than 4.
