    • A multiple phase switched reluctance motor (30). A stator assembly (32) has a plurality of inwardly salient teeth (34a-34l) terminating at a central bore (36) and at least one redundant pole set for each motor phase. A rotor assembly (38) disposed for rotation in the bore has a plurality of rotor teeth (42a-42d). The number of rotor teeth is proportional to the number of stator teeth. The pole redundancy helps distribute ovalizing forces on the motor assembly. This lessens the effect of these forces and reduces motor noise produced by the assembly in response to the forces. The stator may have multiple teeth per pole and the rotor a multiple of the determined rotor teeth. The number of rotor teeth exceeds the number of stator teeth so the rotor teeth overlap the stator teeth. This improves starting torque in a desired direction of motor rotation. The ratio between stator poles and rotor poles includes the following for single tooth per pole motor constructions 6(n):2(n); 6(n):4(n); 6(n):8(n); 8(n):6(n); 8(n):10(n); where n is a positive whole integer having a value of 1 or 2 for some motor applications, and a higher value for certain ratios for other applications. In addition, in some motor constructions, the rotor teeth are formed to provide dual air gaps between the stator and rotor assemblies.

    • A switched reluctance motor has its stator poles divided into at least three phases, each phase having its own independently switchable phase windings wound around the corresponding stator poles. First switch elements control application of power to the windings of the first phase, second switch elements control application of power to the windings of the second phase, and third switch elements control application of power to the windings of the thirds phase. For low speed operation of the motor, the switch elements for each phase are controlled to apply power to its respective phase windings from a selected turn-on angle to a selected turn-off angle. The maximum difference in low speed operation between the turn-on angle and the turn-off angle for each phase is no greater than the angle subtended by adjacent stator poles as measured from the geometric center of the stator. For high speed operation, only the windings of the first phase are energized, and the difference between the turn-on angle and the turn-off angle for the first phase windings is greater than the angle subtended by adjacent stator poles.
