    • A method and device for the precision cutting of a plurality of slots with arched closed ends at regular angularly spaced intervals about the periphery of a thick-walled, bell-shaped steel workpiece. The plurality of slots are cut simultaneously in the workpiece first by an equal number of cutting blades which during a first period cut into the lateral tubular wall of the workpiece by relative displacement along the axis of the workpiece. The workpiece is held in a cutting die which is mounted on a punch press and which during a second period cuts into the outer closed end of the workpiece during the continued relative axial displacement. In a final preferred step the chips formed during the previous steps are severed by the radial outward displacement of the cutting blades toward the cutting edges of the cutting die along slides spring biased to their initial position and inclined toward the cutting die. Alternatively, the cutting blades may be mounted fixed relative to one another in a unitary block.

    • This invention relates to a transmission coupling with a spherical roller. The spherical roller is pivotally mounted on a spindle with or without the interposition of pins for rolling movement in two opposed grooves formed in a jaw. The roller includes two half rollers symmetrical about a plane perpendicular to the spindle and including a great circle of the sphere formed by the roller.     • An axially fixed homokinetic coupling with limited transverse freedom of movement. The coupling essentially comprises a constant velocity three-arm star-type coupling with rollers mounted on a first shaft. The rollers are mounted for rolling movement in pairs of grooves formed in a socket fixed to a second shaft. A retaining member prevents the axial movement of the coupling and includes a sleeve surrounding the first shaft and a spherical collar. The spherical collar cooperates with a spherical portion of a casing secured to the socket. The concave free end of the first shaft is received in a convex part. A spring disposed between the closed end of the socket and the convex part maintains the convex part in cooperation with the concave free end of the first shaft and maintains the spherical part of the casing is very close overlying relationship with the spherical collar of the retaining member to effect a fluidtight seal therebetween. The assembly enables transverse displacement of the shafts to compensate for slight differences in their alignment.

    • A sliding joint for transmitting torque from a driving shaft to a driven shaft. One of the shafts is connected to a shank member and the other of the shafts to a sleeve member. The shank member is adapted to be displaced axially relative to the sleeve member. Balls are interposed between the members which are in addition provided with sockets and grooves respectively for housing the balls along their rolling paths of movement. The grooves are substantially semi-circular in cross section and extend parallel to the axis of the joint and regularly angularly spaced thereabout. The sockets on the other hand are divided into two axially spaced groups and are parallel to the grooves. The sockets have spherically shaped ends and middle sections in semicircular cross section. The spherical ends of the sockets may be formed in stop members of material having a low coefficient of sliding friction.

    • An assembly for internal biasing and axially retaining a constant velocity universal joint of the type having a cup-shaped member, a forked member, spindles received in rollers for rolling and sliding in races formed between the prongs of the forked member, the spindles being associated with a knoblike portion. The assembly assures a constant biasing force for maintaining the contact between the knoblike portion and the closed inner end wall of the forked member. The biasing force is exerted by a coil spring arranged between the knoblike portion and a retaining clip adapted to be secured onto the prongs of the forked member for effectively joining the cup-shaped member to the forked member. A push member is provided having a spherical cavity for contact with the knoblike portion at one end and a portion with an enlarged polygonal cross-section at its other end which extends through a corresponding hole in the retaining clip when the arms are being secured to the prongs and retracted when the other end portion is in alignment with the hole in the clip for guiding thereon. The apices of the portion having the polygonal crosssection latch the push member relative to the clip, and may be released by pivoting the forked member relative to the cup-shaped member which causes cam surfaces on the push member to rotate the push member into or out of alignment with the corresponding hole in the clip. In addition or alternatively fingers with latching teeth may be provided with an equal number of corresponding holes in the clip.

    • A high-capacity coupling for the homokinetic transmission of rotary movement comprises a shell rigidly attached to a shaft or other transmission element. It defines three rectilinear rolling ways for part-spherical rollers which rotate and slide axially on respective axles carried by a transmission shaft.
