    • An electronically commutated motor (4) has a stator (14) with two winding phases (25, 26) which are alternatingly supplied with current during one rotor rotation through 360° cl. The motor also has a permanent-magnet rotor (28) which, when the motor (4) is currentless, assumes at least one predefined rotational position from which the rotor starts in a desired rotation direction upon excitation of a predefined winding phase. A bistable multivibrator (64), which is controlled by the voltage that is induced by the rotor in the instantaneously currentless winding phase, is provided for alternatingly switching on the two winding phases. The bistable multivibrator (64) has an electrical preferred position (92) that it assumes when the motor (4) is switched on, in order to supply power, during the switching-on operation, to the predefined winding phase and thereby to allow the rotor to start in the desired rotation direction. The motor current can be temporarily increased at startup in order to increase the torque at startup.

    • Slow-running brushless d.c. motors with a disk rotor, a flat air gap and an iron-free stator winding made up of a number of coils are particularly suitable for direct drive of sound recording and reproducing equipment at a highly steady and controlled speed. The iron-free coils are arranged in a one-layer winding arrangement connected to form a plurality of phase windings, each comprising a pair of magnetically oppositely poled coils and rotor position sensing means, such as a Hall generator, are provided for controlling the currents in the phase winding so as to obtain four-current pulses per rotor rotation angle of 360 electrical degrees and to set up a rotary magnetic field driving the permanent magnet rotor. Two sets of coils are shown in the stator winding, each set comprising at least one pair electrically connected with each other and oppositely poled and spaced from each other by (2n+1).multidot.180 electrical degrees, where n is a low positive integer. Double wound coils are shown with the two wires of the coils of a set being wound bifilarly and connected to form two-phase windings per set, with the width of the individual coils substantially greater than 180 electrical degrees. Embodiments illustrated show the disposition of coils and sensors for various cases in which the rotor has from three to seven pairs of poles.

    • An improved power supply for converting any of various standard national AC network voltages to low-voltage DC power suitable for driving a 1 or 2-watt device, such as a fan, features a semiconductor control circuit (18, FET 46) which chops each half-wave of a rectified voltage and uses the low-voltage portions to feed charging current pulses to a storage capacitor. The voltage on the capacitor (14) is used by other portions of the circuit to regulate rotation speed of the fan or other consuming device (40) to a value set on a variable resistor. The use of the low-voltage portions of the input signal reduces power losses and increases efficiency.

    • An electronically commutated motor (4) has a permanent-magnet rotor (28) and has a stator (14) that has two winding phases (25, 26). During one rotor rotation of 360° el., firstly current is delivered to the one winding phase (25) within a first rotation angle range via an associated first semiconductor switch (68); and within a subsequent second rotation angle range, current is delivered to the other winding phase (26) via an associated second semiconductor switch (70). The motor further has a commutation apparatus for alternatingly switching ON the first semiconductor switch (68) and the second semiconductor switch (70). This commutation apparatus comprises a bistable multivibrator (FF90) whose switching state is controlled, via at least one comparator (126, 128), by the voltage that is induced by the permanent-magnet rotor (28) in that winding phase (25 or 26) which is currentless at that instant and which, in the instantaneous rotation angle range of the rotor (28), is not being supplied with current via its associated semiconductor switch (68 or 70).

    • A low noise brushless dc motor has a rotor with a permanent magnet and a stator with a bearing system mounting a shaft for rotating the rotor. The bearing system includes at least one axially extending bearing surface that terminates in axially spaced apart ends defining the outer axial limits of the bearing surface. Magnetic components of the rotor and the stator define a magnetic circuit. the magnetic components have an eccentricity creating an asymmetry in the magnetic circuit that causes a resultant lateral magnetic force to be applied on the shaft at a point axially inside the outer axial limits of the bearing surface, whereby the shaft exerts a pressure along the bearing surface between both ends of the bearing surface in a direction perpendicular to the rotor axis.
