    • A motor in which dual permanent magnets in addition to the field magnets are positioned to do most of the work in magnetizing the rotor of a motor and coils on the rotor to supplement and focus the magnetic polarization. The amount of electricity required to run the motor is less than with other permanent magnet-assisted motors and considerably less than with standard electric motors. A top permanent cylindrical magnet is held in place by a top end-plate on a housing around a rotor, and a bottom permanent cylindrical magnet is held in place by a bottom end-plate the housing below the rotor, the rotor being rotatable on an axle aligned with an axis of the top cylindrical magnet and of the bottom cylindrical magnet, by which sections of the rotor are in turn magnetized with a polarity matching the top-to-bottom aligned polarity of the top and bottom permanent magnets, and individual inductive wire coils being wound around a portion of a plurality of rotor arms radiating from a rotor axle, the portion being adjacent to an end of each respective rotor arm, the coils being arranged as in an armature of a direct current electric motor, electrified through a commutator and brushes such that the coils produce the same magnetic polarity in the rotor overall as is produced in the rotor by the top and bottom permanent magnets.

    • A disc-type motor characterized by increased efficiency includes first and second parallel spaced stator members made of magnetic material in fixed relation, each of the stator members having a flat circular shape and an even plurality of pie-shaped permanent-magnet poles thereon, illustratively eight in number. The facing poles on the stator members have opposite polarities. The motor further includes a disc-like rotor made of a non-conducting material rotatably mounted between the two stator members. Conducting wires are wound in a non-overlapping (single-layer) flat spiral configuration to form a number of coils equal to twice the number of poles per stator member, half adhered to each face of the rotor disc. Each coil encloses a pie-segmented area about equal to the area of one of the stator poles. On each face of the rotor the coils magnetically oppose one another, and the coils on one face of the disc are angularly offset from the coils on the other face of the disc. The motor further includes a commutator connected to the rotor, the commutator including twice as many bars of conducting material as there are coils on each rotor face, with certain of the commutator bars electrically interconnected.

    • A discoidal, flat coil armature for a flat disc motor is formed by winding coils of wire on mutually spaced inner and outer ring structures. The inner ring structure surrounds a commutator body having segments with tangs. Automatic apparatus, including a rotating flier, a preform clamp and rotator, and a wire guide assembly, winds the coils and makes coil terminal connections to the commutator tangs before, during, and after the winding of the coils. The coils are tightly wound on the ring structures so that they form, along with the ring structures and the commutator body, an armature preform having a self-supporting shape. The parts of the finished preform are bonded together and to an armature shaft by a matrix of resinous material. When completed, the armature includes a thin-walled, active coil section having substantially radially extending active coil sides encapsulated in plastic and located between the inner and the outer ring structures and also includes inner and outer coil end turns that are also encapsulated in plastic and that extend substantially circumferentially along the inner and the outer ring structures, respectively.
