    • A chain-belt for engagement with the pulleys of a continuously variable transmission consists of interleaved sets of chain links joined for articulation by a joint which has a rocking action. The joint includes a pair of pins. A small camber is introduced into one or both of the pins to create a spring load between the pins and the links to retain the pins in the chain during handling and assembly. Each chain link includes a pair of spaced apertures adjacent the opposite ends; each aperture has a generally hour-glass shape with the enlarged ends receiving the pins. Also, each chain link has a pair of oppositely disposed tabs adjacent one end with the location of the tabs on the links alternating on adjacent links of each set. In addition the outermost two links of each set of links had a width substantially less than the width of the inner links in that same set.

    • A variable diameter pulley assembly for use with a power transmission belt and adapted to be connected to a shaft comprising opposed sets of axial and radial movable generally triangular or trapezoidal-shaped flange members, the sides of opposed sets being in substantial engagement to provide at all pulley diameters a generally cylindrical and continuous surface for belt engagement. A pair of axially movable hubs supports the flange members, and each hub has guides for guiding the flange members in their axial and radial movements. A central cam member with conical cam surfaces may be provided which cooperates with cam follower surfaces of the flange members whereby axial movement of the flange members causes radial movement thereof.

    • A three-way laced chain (40) has a plurality of links (32, 43, 45) that arerranged in rows (A, B and C) that extend across the width of the chain (40) where similarly located end regions of the links (42, 43, 45) are offset. The links (42, 43, 45) that extends along the longitudinal center of the chain (40). A plurality of first (43), second (42) and third (45) links are positioned in substantially parallel relationship with respect to each other. The second links (42) have a thickness less than the first links (43) and the third links (45) have a thickness greater than the thickness of the first links (43). An aperture (49) is located at each end of the first (43), second (42) and third (45) links. A plurality of connecting elements (51) extend through the apertures (49) and connect together adjacent first (43), second (42) and third (45) links. The second links (42) and third links (45) are positioned in the chain (40) to vary the spacing between adjacent links (42, 43, 45) and to vary distribution of the loads on the links (42, 43, 45) whereby the loads on the links (42, 43, 45) are substantially balanced across the width of the chain (40) and bending of the connecting elements (51) is substantially reduced.

    • A power transmission chain extending between driving means, such as pulleys or sprockets, to transfer torque wherein the chain is formed of a plurality of links having a substantially constant pitch and a plurality of serially arranged contact surfaces engaging contact surfaces of the driving means. The links are designed with longitudinally spaced symmetrical apertures positioned on the longitudinal center line of the link and pairs of asymmetric pins providing a pin and rocker joint between adjacent sets of links; the pairs of pins having facing rocking surfaces with variation of the contact point between rocking surfaces depending on the orientation of the two pins.
