Also, each chain link has a pair of oppositely disposed tabs adjacent one end with the location of the tabs on the links alternating on adjacent links of each set. In addition the outermost two links of each set of links had a width substantially less than the width of the inner links in that same set.

    • A power transmission chain-belt as disclosed is especially adaptable to transmit power between the pulleys of a pulley transmission, the pulleys of which are each constructed of a pair of flanges. The chain-belt comprises a plurality of sets of interleaved links joined by pivot means, and a set of at least three generally V-shaped or trapezoidal load blocks located between each adjacent pair of pivot means. Each load block has a central opening permitting its assembly with the links, and edge surfaces to drivingly contact the pulley flanges. The central opening of the load blocks has a height greater than the height of the links, so as to define a space therebetween. Resilient means, such as a curved leaf spring, is positioned between each set of links in the space between the chain and the central opening of a set of load blocks to apply a force on the load blocks of each set. The load blocks of a set engage the pulley flanges at different times, both insuring a sharing of the load by all blocks of a set of blocks and also changing the usual pattern of impact noise due to the blocks successively engaging the pulley flanges.

    • A rotating annular piston is hydraulically actuated to engage a rotating friction device, such as a clutch or brake, by introducing fluid pressure to an apply chamber for the piston. Disengagement is subsequently effected by exhausting fluid from the chamber, after which a centrifugal pressure head release valve in a wall of the chamber releases any residual entrapped fluid from the chamber in order to prevent undesired false actuation of the rotating piston that may otherwise occur due to centrifugal force acting on the residual fluid. The valve comprises a metallic ball subject to centrifugal force tending to move it radially outward from the piston axis but held in a tapered or conical seat of an exhaust port, thereby blocking the port, by fluid pressure supplied to the apply chamber. In the absence of that fluid pressure, however, the centrifugal force exerted on the ball unseats it and opens the port. By tilting the seat axis relative to the piston axis the ramp angle, formed between the piston axis and the portion of the seat radially outermost from the piston axis, may be minimized with a resultant maximizing of the rotational speed at which the piston may operate. The closer that the outermost seat portion is to being parallel to the piston axis, and thus perpendicular to the centrifugal force, the greater that force must be before the ball will unseat when there is fluid pressure in the chamber to move the piston in the apply direction.

    • The disclosed control system regulates changes of gear ratio in an automatic transmission for a vehicle. A supervisory control arrangement monitors operator input commands through the shift range selector lever, and receives a desired-ratio command either from a shift point computer or from a manual gear shift selector. When the supervisory control arrangement determines that the desired-ratio signal differs from the actual ratio, the monitoring function is interrupted and a shift-initiate command is provided. This command is utilized to assign certain components for use in a shift quality control arrangement, for effecting the controlled ratio change. A torque output signal from the vehicle drive line is used in conjunction with the shift quality control arrangement. After the shift is completed, the previously assigned components are released and the supervisory control arrangement resumes the monitoring of the desired ratio as contrasted to the actual gear ratio. One circuit controls all the upshifts, whether 1-2, 2-3, or 3-4, and one other circuit controls all the downshifts. This assignment of certain components for each controlled ratio change, and their release so they can be re-used in subsequent ratio changes, contributes to a cost-effective trade-off between the number of circuits required in the total system and the complexity of the logic circuits actually employed.

    • A control system to change gear ratio in an automatic transmission through friction elements engaged by hydraulic pressure. A closed loop electrical circuit is completed between a transducer, which provides an electrical signal related to the output torque of the transmission, and a pair of control valves, to vary the pressure applied to a friction element by each control valve. A circuit for computing reaction torque is coupled between the transducer and a logic control circuit, which provides logic command signals for controlling operation of components in the closed loop circuit. The system computes an output torque ramp when a downshift is called for by the shift point computer and uses controllers which react oppositely to control engagement of a clutch and brake in response to error signals of torque output compared to a desired ramp to produce a proper shift.
