    • An integrated intake manifold assembly including a poppet valve disposed at the air inlet to the manifold to regulate air flow into the manifold; a poppet valve disposed on the manifold to regulate exhaust gas flow into the air intake system; and a bi-directional camshaft with cams for operating simultaneously the manifold vacuum regulating (MVR) valve and the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve. The valve bodies are integrally formed in the wall of the intake manifold. The camshaft is driven by a DC motor and gear train. The cams are arranged on the shaft to provide optimum synchronized opening and closing of the related valves. When used on a diesel engine, the assembly may further include a swirl valve plate disposed between the manifold and the engine head and having a plurality of ganged swirl valves actuated by levers connected to the camshaft for coordinated motion with the MVR and EGR valves. Preferably, the swirl valve plate is also ported as a distribution rail to receive exhaust gas from the single EGR valve and distribute it to the individual cylinders. The valve stems of the MVR and EGR valves are modified as forked yokes engaging the camshaft to minimize side loading of the valve stems by the cams.

    • An integrated fuel system for use in an internal combustion engine has a fuel meter body including a first, upper housing and a second, lower housing which are joined along a sealing flange to define a fuel plenum therebetween. The upper and the lower housings each have fuel injector sockets in opposed pairs; each injector socket in the upper housing opposing a corresponding socket in the lower housing. The sockets open through the respective housing walls and are configured to reversibly capture a fuel injector between each pair. The reversible mounting of the injectors within the fuel plenum facilitate fuel delivery from two sides of the fuel meter body to thereby simplify fuel distribution in a small fuel intake. A novel mounting configuration for the fuel meter body within the intake manifold is also disclosed.

    • A method of assembling vehicles is provided that includes providing a first engine with a first engine manifold having a first opening, and installing a first fitting in the first opening. A second engine is provided with a second engine manifold having a second opening, and a second fitting substantially identical to the first fitting is installed in the second opening. A seal portion of the first fitting is separated from a body portion of the first fitting at a weakened joint between the seal portion and the body portion. The body portion of the first fitting is then connected with a brake system on a first vehicle to enable vacuum assist of the brake system via a vacuum within the first engine manifold. The second engine is operated without separating a seal portion of the second fitting so that the second opening is plugged by the second fitting.
