    • A dual gap horizontal thin film inductive head is provided which writes wide and reads narrow so as to avoid noise problems when reading an information track on a magnetic medium. The head has first and second gap layers between first and second horizontal pole tips. The pole tips and the corresponding pole pieces of the head are constructed of a high magnetic moment material, such as NiFe (Permalloy). The first gap layer is constructed of a magnetic insulator, such as tungsten, and the second gap layer is constructed of a low magnetic moment material, such as NiFeCr. Accordingly, the magnetic moment of the second gap layer is lower than the magnetic moment of the first and second pole tips and the corresponding first and second pole pieces. During recording both gap layers function as a gap because the second gap layer is saturated and behaves as a magnetic insulator. During playback only the first gap layer functions a gap because the second gap layer is not saturated causing it to behave as a magnetic conductor. Accordingly, during record the head "writes wide" and during playback the head "reads narrow." A unique method is provided for making the head which employs a vertical edge of a photoresist layer for forming the first and second gap layers.

    • Techniques of the present invention include detecting a touchdown between a read/write head of a disk drive and a surface of a magnetic disk using multiple touchdown sensors located at an air-bearing surface (ABS). The multiple sensors increase the likelihood that a touchdown event—i.e., a portion of the ABS of the head contacting the underlying magnetic disk surface—will be detected. During touchdown, the portion of the head contacting the magnetic disk generates frictional heat which changes a characteristic (e.g., the electrical resistance) of at least one of the sensors located at the ABS. When the sensors are connected to a detection circuit, the changing characteristic may be monitored to identify a touchdown event. The touchdown sensors may be, for example, electrically connected in either series or parallel to the detection circuit. Thus, as long as the electrical resistance of one of the sensors is changed, a touchdown event may be detected.

    • The present invention provides a low profile stackable Internet appliance printer for use with a television receiver and monitor and responsive to commands from a remote device for printing user desired information. The printer has a box like rectangular shaped housing conforming in size to that of conventional electronic audio video components such as cable boxes, DVD players, amplifiers, video tapes and the like to facilitate the stacking of the printer with such other components. A base member having defines an interior cavity for receiving a removable combination input/output tray cassette and supports from below a low profile printbar including its feed motor, drive motor, associated electronic drivers for controlling the firing of low profile printheads, carriage movement and the moving of paper to print user desired images. The combination input/output tray cassette includes a release to allow the complete removal of the cassette for resupplying an input tray portion thereof with a new supply of paper and for providing a user with access to the interior of the printer to facilitate the removal of any paper jams. A user actuated paper size adjuster permits the input tray portion of the cassette unit to accommodate at least two different sizes of paper and couples a repositioning mechanism to an leading edge kick out feature to facilitate the ejection of sheets of paper in accordance with the paper size selection made by the user.
