    • A drying section of a paper machine includes a plurality of individual drying groups, wherein the drying cylinders of a drying group are served by 2 respective dryer wire or felt that passes over drying cylinders of the drying group and presses a web to be dried against the surface of the drying cylinders. The invention is adapted for either single tier or double tier drying groups. At least one press roll is disposed between and separates two of the drying groups. In one embodiment, the at least one press roll forms a nip with the adjacent drying cylinder, either upstream or downstream, to define a dewatering nip through which the web passes. A dewatering belt passes over the press roll in the nip. The wire for a respective drying group is guided away from the dewatering nip so that only the web and the dewatering belt pass through the press nip. In alternate embodiments, two press rolls may be disposed between the adjacent drying groups, and the two press rolls define a press nip between them. A respective dewatering belt passes over each of the press rolls. One of those press rolls may also be in contact with and define a press nip with the adjacent drying cylinder in the adjacent drying group. An open draw free path may be defined between one of the press rolls and the adjacent drying cylinder.

    • Calendering takes place in a calendering zone which operates under pressure with application of temperature and moisture. The desired smoothness is achieved with a correspondingly long dwell time of the material web in a correspondingly long calendering zone in view of the speed of web travel. A web which is still wet is guided between parallel heatable surfaces which are arranged on both sides of the web and face each other through the web and can each be pressed against the web. The surfaces are designed to form and hold a given precise contour of the calendering zone over its full length. One surface is constructed e.g. as a casing of a heated roller and the second surface is constructed as an endless flexible belt which can be pressed in a direction towards the roller casing by means of a concave supporting element. If wished, the web can be calendered on both sides with the method.

    • A method of imaging with an optical system characterized by a diffraction-limited resolution volume is disclosed. In a sample that includes a plurality of phototransformable optical labels (“PTOLs”) distributed in the sample with a density greater than an inverse of the diffraction-limited resolution volume of the optical system, a first subset of the PTOLs in the sample are activated, and the density of the activated PTOLs in the first subset is less than the inverse of the diffraction-limited resolution volume. A first portion of the PTOLs in the first subset of PTOLs is excited. Radiation emitted from the activated and excited PTOLs in the first portion of PTOLs is detected with the imaging optics, and locations of activated and excited PTOLs in the first portion of PTOLs is determined with a sub-diffraction-limited accuracy based on the detected radiation emitted from the activated and excited PTOLs.

    • In a coating method for direct or indirect application of a coating medium onto a moving surface, the amount of coating medium dispensed by an applicator device within a given time period and the actuating force that is exerted on the metering element, in order to achieve a coating layer of a desired coating weight, are altered independently of each other. In a relaxation operation mode, the amount of coating medium applied within a given time period is reduced when the coating weight exceeds a desired value; when the coating weight falls below the desired value, the actuating force exerted on the metering element is reduced. In a contact pressure based operating mode, the amount of coating medium applied within a given time period is reduced when the coating weight exceeds a desired value; when the coating weight falls below the desired value the actuating force exerted on the metering element is increased. When the coating weight falls below the desired value, the amount of coating medium applied within a given time period is increased and the actuating force exerted on the metering element is reduced, while keeping constant the contact pressure of the metering element against the moving surface.
