    • A starter for an engine equipped with a motor generator achieves lower cost and reduced sizes and capacities of circuit elements by reducing the assist load on the motor generator: it is provided with a motor generator (2) and a starting motor (10) connected to an engine (1); a startup state determining circuit (20) which determines the startup state from operating condition and selectively issues ON signals M1 and M2 to the motor generator and the starting motor; a key switch (6) which generates a start signal (Qe) at the time of starting the engine; and a temperature sensor 12 which generates a temperature signal (Te) corresponding to the temperature of the engine. The startup state determining circuit actuates only the motor generator as a motor in a startup state wherein the temperature signal indicates not less than a predetermined temperature corresponding to the warm-up state of the engine, while it actuates both the starting motor and the motor generator in a startup state wherein the temperature signal indicates a temperature below the predetermined temperature. And the startup state determining circuit actuates the starting motor first, then actuates the motor generator after a delay time corresponding to a rush current period of the starting motor has elapsed in the second startup state.

    • A magnetic switch includes a switch case 109, a molded cap 108 fastened to the switch case by crimped portions, two fixed terminals 107 having fixed contact shafts and fixed contacts, and a movable contact 5, wherein the crimped portions are disposed between the fixed terminals and coil terminal conductors in the vicinity of an open end portion of the molded cap to form four crimped portions 109d engaging the molded cap by crimping at positions radially further inwards than the inside diameter of the switch case. The outside diameter of the molded cap may be equal to or greater than the outside diameter of the switch case. The cross-sectional shape of the fixed contacts is an octagon and two sides thereof are approximately parallel to the outer circumferential surface of the molded cap.

    • A starter protection device which substantially operates with only a signal from a key switch, does not require wiring from an alternator or the like, and can be standardized and reduced in size can be obtained. The starter protection device for opening a starter auxiliary switch (5) under a certain condition to protect a starter (2) for starting an engine, by making the starter (2) inoperable. The starter protection device comprises a switch circuit (716) closed by turning on a key switch (6) for closing the starter auxiliary switch (5), a timer circuit (715) that starts operating at the same time the key switch (6) is turned on, and a timer circuit (710) that starts operating at the same time the key switch (6) is released, wherein the opening and closing of the switch circuit (716) is controlled based on outputs of the first and second timer circuits.
