    • An apparatus for starting an engine, including a motor, an output shaft driven by the motor, a pinion provided along the output shaft, and an electro-magnetic solenoid device. The electro-magnetic solenoid device is configured to push the pinion axially toward a ring gear of the engine to mesh the pinion with the ring gear and transfer a rotational force, which is referred to as a motor torque, generated by energization of the motor from the pinion to the ring gear, thereby starting the engine. The apparatus is configured such that, at starting of the engine in its warmed-up state, the motor torque can continue to be applied from the pinion to the ring gear until at least the second compression stroke even when an engine speed varies.

    • A drive train (1) of a motor vehicle has an internal combustion engine (2) with a crankshaft (6). A transmission (3) is connected downstream for driving at least one axle (5) of the motor vehicle. A starter generator (9) is attached to the crankshaft (6) of the internal combustion engine (2) via a spur gear mechanism (10). The spur gear mechanism (10) has a first drive train (11) with a switchable clutch (12) and a second drive train (13) with a switchable clutch or a freewheel (14) that is active during the starter mode of the starter generator (9). In a drive train of this type, the components for transmitting the torque of the starter generator (9) require only little space and, during starting, the crankshaft (6) of the internal combustion engine is decoupled from tensile forces and weights which would be observed when a belt drive is used.

    • In a permanently engaged starter system (20), a one-way clutch (40) is located between a starter motor (21) and a starter gear (54) for initiating the start of an internal combustion engine. The clutch (40) can include a starter gear (54), an outer race (56), an inner race (60), a roller cage (42) supporting a plurality of roller disks (46), and at least one spring (52). The roller cage (42) can include an enlarged inertia ring supported adjacent to a radially outwardly located peripheral edge (50) for retarding rotational movement of the roller cage (42) relative to the inner race (60) in response to acceleration of the starter motor (21). The spring (52) biases the roller cage (42) relative to the inner race (60) toward a disengaged clutch position, such that the plurality of roller disks (46) engage the inner race (60) and are spaced from the outer race surface (56).
