    • A method for cleaning and coating a conductor in a plasma reaction chamber utilizing a plasma gas mixture containing Argon and CF.sub.4 to clean and coat a conductor. The method for cleaning and coating a conductor includes the combination of cleaning processes including, physical reduction and chemical reaction and the formation of a polymerization passivation film formed on oxyfluoro metal compositions (SnO.sub.x F.sub.y) which occur during exposure of a conductor to the process of the invention. The polymerization passivation film is formed as a result of the combination of the degraded carbon Tetrafloride (CF.sub.4) gas and degraded environmental and casual hydrocarbons which are present in the form of a variety of unspecified organic contaminants to form crude polymeric molecules in the high energy environment of the plasma. The treatment of conductive surfaces according to the method of the present invention has shown to allow a soldering operation for 3 to 8 hours following treatment without additional preparation, cleaning or treatment.

    • Apparatus for automatically actuating manually operable selector elements, such as the type which normally are found on a manually operable postage meter. A carriage is provided and is movable between an initial, start position and an end position. Plural actuator elements are coupled to and movable with the carriage. These actuator elements are positioned in operable relation with the selector elements and are selectively energized while the carriage moves between its start and end positions to correspondingly activate the selector elements. When used in the environment of a postage meter, the selective energization of the actuator elements thereby conditions the postage meter to provide a corresponding indication of postage. Reset apparatus resets the carriage following the selective energization of the actuator elements. With minor changes in the structure of the actuator elements, the automatic actuator can be used in conjunction with, for example, postage meters of the type having movable levers selectively positioned to establish corresponding monetary units of postage, or an array of columns of depressible keys, each key corresponding to any one of the possible monetary units of postage.

    • In a public cordless telephone system, a cordless telephone handset unit requests and establishes a communications link with a public base unit served by a desired local service provider whenever possible. By generating a service request containing a specific carrier request code, the handset unit selectively identifies an available public base unit served by the desired local service provider and then establishes a communications link with this base unit. In response to receiving the service request from the handset unit, all public base units operated by the chosen service provider respond by providing a first acknowledgment signal. All other public base units respond by providing a second acknowledgment signal. When both such signals are received, the handset unit responds only to the first acknowledgment signal and establishes a communications link with the first base unit providing this signal. When only the second acknowledgment signal is received, the handset unit responds by establishing a communications link with the first base unit providing this second acknowledgment signal. When communications is established with a base unit providing the second acknowledgment signal, an alerting signal is generated at the handset unit thereby informing the user that even though he or she is able to make a telephone call, the desired local service provider was not reached. Collision avoidance between public base units while supporting this operation may be provided by assigning a specific one of a plurality of times during which each public base unit may respond to the service request from the handset unit.

    • A blood analyzer is provided with means to automatically pierce the sealed closure of a vacuum container or to aspirate through an aspirator tip blood samples to be analyzed. The samples are drawn serially through a repositionable valve structure, preferably of rotary form, and having three members in layers with aligned ports in one position to receive the blood that is drawn through the valve by a syringe type aspirator. Another position of the valve connects diluent supplies providing measured amounts of diluent to wash out the bores of the middle member of the valve containing amounts of blood measured by the size of the bores. In the case of the red blood cell measurement, where the bore is extremely small, a larger by-pass port is provided in parallel with the sample containing bore to allow more rapid flow simultaneously through both.Blood analysis is performed by separate conventional cell counter arrangements for each of the red and white counts. A novel configuration involves a bore through a block generally tangential to a bore which engages a cylindrical chamber in the sidewall of which is a jewel orifice. A foil electrode is used in the tangential passage and a larger tapered electrode with the smaller end near the orifice in the cylindrical output chamber. A discontinuity in the form of an air bubble in a passage feeding the counter apparatus enables the position of the bubble to be sensed at one place to turn on the counter and in another place in the passage to turn off the counter.The three-layer valve structure has various special indexing features and cleaning features, and the intake devices have features associated with cleaning as well.
