摘要： A tape feed for a postage meter which uses the envelope transport system of the postage meter to feed a tape from a tape receptacle into the path of the envelope feed system. The tape receptacle is pivotally mounted adjacent one of the belts of the envelope transport system. A solenoid is connected to the tape receptacle through a cam pin and cam slot arrangement for providing the pivotal movement. When the solenoid is energized, the tape receptacle is pivoted into a position wherein the belt extends into a slot in the receptacle and grips a tape to discharge a tape from the receptacle and feed it into the envelope transport system. When the solenoid is de-energized, the solenoid pivots the receptacle into a position wherein the tapes in the receptacle are out of contact with the belt. A sensor is provided to de-energize the solenoid when the belt moves the leading edge of the tape into gripping relationship by the envelope transport system.

摘要： An apparatus for stacking a stream of moving sheet-like material such as, for example, mailpieces is described. The apparatus comprises a first moving belt positioned at a first level, the first belt adapted to receive the sheets lying in a first orientation and position the sheets downstream of the first belt; a second moving belt positioned at a level lower than the first belt and positioned whereby the sheets travel from an end position of the first belt down a step to the second belt; a first sensor positioned to sense break member in relation to the total thickness of the sheets on the first belt thereby causing an incremental movement of the first belt; a second sensor positioned in contiguous relation to the step and adapted to sense the sheet-like material as the sheets drop down the step to a second orientation thereby incrementally moving the sheet-like material according to the increased number of sheets on the second belt as they are stacked thereon in the second orientation; and a movable back stop member adapted to be locked onto the second belt, and further adapted to help support and stack the sheets in the second orientation, the stop member moving with the movement of the second belt.

摘要： A mail handling system includes a printhead for printing a postage indicium on a mailpiece; a transport mechanism that moves the mailpiece past the printhead during printing of the postage indicium; a postage meter including means for accounting for a value of postage associated with the postage indicium; an image generator in operative communication with the postage meter, the image generator producing a synchronous image data stream for use by the printhead in printing the postage indicium; a buffer which receives and stores the synchronous image data stream from the image generator; apparatus for switching the image generator between an ON status whereby the image generator produces the synchronous image data stream and an OFF status whereby the image generator does not produce the synchronous image data stream based upon the occurrence of a predetermined condition; structure for transferring the stored synchronous image data stream to the printhead in an asynchronous manner; and wherein the switching apparatus regulates within a predetermined range an amount of the synchronous image data stream stored in the buffer by switching the image generator between the ON status and the OFF status thereby effectively permitting the printhead to use the synchronous image data stream in an asynchronous manner.

摘要： A system and method for printing a postage indicia, including a desired postage amount and encrypted information, onto a piece of mail. The mail when inserted into the normal mail system can be verified as having legally issued postage through realtime access to a central registered user database. A user takes a powerable postal dispensing device to an authorized agent of a postal authority in order to obtain a replenishment of the amount of postage stored within the portable postage dispensing device. A desired amount of postage is entered into the dispensing device by an authorized agent through a host processor-based system. The user is then able to access this stored postage at the user's location through a complementary host processor-based system. The authorized agent uses a PC bond system designed to allow data to be entered into the portable dispensing device only upon exercising a series of comprehensive checks based, in part, by data stored within the portable dispensing device. The postal dispensing device has an operating program which defines all aspects and extents of its possible behaviors. Access to its facilities is allowed only after stringent security measures have been met.
