摘要： Systems and methods which provide for activation of postage indicia at a point of sale are shown. In operation according to embodiments, unassigned (e.g., not yet activated or not yet representing postage value) tokens (e.g., IBI barcodes) suitable for later use as postage indicia are distributed to various point of sale locations, such as retail locations, consumer kiosks, vending machines, etc. and made available for purchase by users. Upon purchase, at a point of sale, such unassigned tokens are preferably activated as valid or “live” postage indicia. Thereafter, the postage indicia may be used to post mail items.

The system and methods eliminate needs for a user to wait on a service provider's assistance to determine the cost of sending a package while protecting the service provider with prepayment before delivery. The processes described enable a new efficiency in package delivery wherein the users no longer need to wait in a queue at a delivery service and the delivery service no longer needs to have customer service representatives determining the cost to deliver the package and accepting payment from customers prior to the delivery service accepting the package. Such systems enable automated delivery of packages with minimal human intervention.

摘要： Systems, apparatuses and methods for restoring data related to funds for franking mail on a postal device in response to a hardware failure. A postal device may include a memory for storing funds data. For example, an ascending register may store the amount of funds charged by franking mail or a descending register may store the amount of funds remaining to frank mail. Once one or more pieces of mail have been franked, the funds data may be transferred to, and stored in, a storage base in a secure fashion. In response to a hardware failure of the postal device, the secure funds data may be retrieved from the storage. A replacement postal device may then be restored or reset based on the secure funds data received from the storage base. Alternatively, a customer account can be refunded based on the secure funds.
