    • There is provided an image encoding method in a facsimile apparatus or an image filing apparatus as an image communication apparatus. In this method, a color image signal which is expressed by a plurality of color component signals to be encoded is input, the input color image signal is converted into a bit stream signal, and the bit stream signal is encoded by prediction encoding. A parameter for the prediction encoding is changed in accordance with the color image signal to be encoded. The encoding operation is executed adaptively to the color image signal to be encoded. By virtue of bit stream converting the binary color signal, efficient encoding using the color correlation can be executed and an increase in data amount is prevented. By encoding the bit stream signal using a dynamic arithmetic code, a binary color image can be efficiently encoded.

    • A coating apparatus for coating an object with a coating material in a coating direction includes a holder adapted to be mounted on a controllable support member, a shaft slidably supported in the holder, and a head member mounted on the shaft for angular movement in a direction transverse to the coating direction, the head member having a sliding surface for slidable contact with the object and a coating material outlet positioned forwardly of the sliding surface in the coating direction. In another embodiment, the head member has sliding legs for sliding contact with the object at front and rear positions in the coating direction, at least one of the sliding legs having a recess defined therein to provide a gap between the sliding leg and the object, the gap having a prescribed width in a direction transverse to the coating direction. The head has a coating material outlet defined between the sliding legs and a concave coating material reservoir defined between the sliding legs for temporarily storing the coating material supplied form the coating material outlet and for supplying the stored coating material into the recess.

    • A precision table for a machine tool or the like, which table mounts a workpiece and is adapted to be selectively moved or slid in two directions by a low viscosity bearing such as an externally pressurized air bearing. The bearing includes at least one guide of a substantially J-shaped cross-sectional configuration with a jet arrangement being provided within the guide for jetting a pressurized gas through at least one orifice toward at least one internal surface of the guide. The jet arrangement is disposed within the guide which is fixedly arranged on a flat surface of a bed so that the table is supported by an air film in a clearance between the jet arrangement and portions of the guide.
